  • Faith: Easter time to ponder great sacrifice and joy

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Apr 12, 2022

“Good Friday and Easter free us to think about other things far beyond our own personal fate,” wrote author, pastor, theologian, and modern-day martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer. And he continued, they liberate us to contemplate “the ultimate meaning of life, suffering, and events; and we lay hold of a great hope.” I am quite sure that when Bonhoeffer spoke of the cross and the Resurrection as “freeing” us, he did so on purpose. If I’m not mistaken, Bonhoeffer’s words above wer...

  • Certain things I miss with watch on demand

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Apr 12, 2022

Last weekend, I attended my first multi-day group event since early 2020. There’s something special about gathering with a group of folks who have interests similar to yours, swapping stories, recalling favorite moments from beloved books or movies or television shows. We did a lot of that this weekend, which set me to thinking about the joy of the shared experience, and how that is evolving, what with the internet and endless options for streaming media. I wasn’t esp...

  • Opinion: Liberty remains essential principle

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Apr 12, 2022

Liberty, as a principle, will always prove true. Respecting liberty always works, violating it always hurts. The truth doesn’t care whether you like this or not. Government’s very existence violates liberty by interfering in your natural rights to life, liberty, and property. Some people claim government protects your liberty or “gives you freedom,” but this is as nonsensical as claiming arsonists are protecting your property by burning down your house. Anyone who limits your...

  • Opinion: Jackson part of line of great Black women

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 12, 2022

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court got me to thinking about other African-American women who have made their mark on American history. There are many, including lesser-known women such as the late Constance Baker Motley, the first Black woman to be appointed to a federal judgeship. In her day, she played a pivotal role in desegregating Southern institutions of higher learning, critical to ending the era of Jim Crow. Then there are famous Black women like Rosa Parks. In 1955, she refused to g...

Tribune News Service, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 12, 2022

Many families struggle with a loved one facing encroaching cognitive impairments – and the decision points serve as heartbreaking reminders of life’s fragility. More than simply taking the keys away, some families preside over a sad exit to iconic life. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Ronald Reagan shared his final thoughts about this subject when writing, “I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.” Recently, we learned of another world-renown figure leaving the stage due to cognitive...

The hearing was originally slated to take public comment on an adjustment to the county's cannabis ordinance regarding the distance between a cannabis business and certain property owners: Was it to be property line to property line or door to door. During the public hearing on the ordinance local Realtor Brett Joh...
