LOS ANGELES - O.J. Simpson, whose rise and fall from American football hero to accused murderer to prison inmate fueled a rancorous public drama that obsessed the nation and spawned debates over race, wealth, justice and retribution, has died from cancer, according to a family member's statement on X. Simpson was once the country's most admired athlete, a formidable running back who broke records with grace and determination. He became a crossover star, lending his handsome...
When the Clovis and Portales High softball teams met early in the season at Lady Wildcat Field, the teams combined for two football scores in a doubleheader swept by the Lady Rams. Wednesday's rematch – pushed back a day by Tuesday's rain – turned out much differently. Portales won both games again, but took the opener 14-8 after trailing 8-0 early and then squeaked out a 3-2 victory with a run in the seventh in Game 2. "I feel like we're doing things in midseason that we sho...
Had things gone according to plan, Clovis High's tennis girls might be looking at a big District 4-5A win over Carlsbad. Illness limited junior Madita Evert, the Lady Wildcats' No. 1 singles player, to just doubles against the Cavegirls. Then sophomore Emily Bjorklund had to default at No. 4 singles due to a leg injury with a 6-1, 2-1 lead over Carlsbad freshman Charise Young. The final result was a 6-3 victory for the Cavegirls in the district opener for both sides. Carlsbad...
West Las Vegas, ranked third in Class 3A, built an early 4-0 lead against Portales High on Thursday and held on for a 5-4 victory at Ram Field. Trailing 5-1, Portales (7-5) put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh before coming up short. Sophomore Javier Montoya went 2-for-3 for the Dons (12-2), with a run scored and an RBI. “They got the hits when they needed them,” Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said. “We left a lot of runners in scoring position. “We had plenty of opportunities, but we just couldn...
Clovis High's baseball team has had a pretty solid pre-District 4-5A slate, and the Wildcats are hopeful it carries over. The Cats now have a trio of three-game district series remaining on the schedule, beginning this week against Carlsbad. Manny Chavez appears to be rounding into form. The Portales High junior is the defending Class 4A state boys javelin champion, winning by nearly 27 feet at 177 feet, 2 inches, and he's already easily surpassed that mark this season. On Thursday, Chavez posted his third consecutive personal best with a throw of 192 feet in Portales' George-Love Relays at Greyhound Stadium. It was the highlight for the Rams, who finished 10th in the 14-team meet with 25 points. "We had better...

On this date ... 1935: “Black Sunday” brought what’s still considered the worst dust storm in High Plains history. “A mountain of blackness swept across the High Plains and instantly turned a warm, sunny afternoon into a horrible blackness that was darker than the darkest night,” the National Weather Service reports on its website. “Winds in the (Texas) Panhandle reached upward of 60 mph and, for at least a brief time, the blackness was so complete that one could not see their own hand in front of their face.” The worst of...

In last week’s column, I said government had made up a new holiday and superimposed it over Easter. I suggested this may have been done as an intentional slap in the face to a major segment of the population, intended to provoke a reaction. I was wrong. Government made up that holiday — or official declaration — and set the annual date for it back in 2009. The only reason I heard about it this year was because it coincided with Easter, which generated the outrage that then...
Congress is once again in the throes of trying to cobble together a piece of legislation that will provide Ukraine with some money in support of its war effort. The amount of money being discussed has changed several times in the past few months, but it generally comes down to about $60 billion, so let’s use that figure for discussion purposes. Supporters of the war would have you believe that the $60 billion has to be provided, right now, and that is already too late. The m...
Earning a bachelor’s degree is a lot more complicated than it used to be. Not necessarily harder, just more complicated. Set aside for a moment affordability, which is skewed toward the middle and upper classes along with straight-A students who test well. Getting into college is easier than staying in college, and staying in college to earn that degree requires lots of delayed gratification. I have long contended that a bachelor’s degree does more than show your developing “expertise” in a particular field or two. It show...

The Roosevelt County Commission unanimously approved a grant application that would provide funding for various renovations at the Roosevelt County Courthouse. At their regular meeting Tuesday, Kevin Spears with the Ninth Judicial District Court told the commission what renovations were needed upstairs, including improvements to the restrooms and jury room. “The total cost of the project would not exceed $1 million,” Spears said. The cost would be just over $858,000 and the county would cover only 50%, which would be aro...

What was the business at 2208 N. Prince St. before it was Kelley’s Bar & Grill? According to records at the Curry County Assessor’s Office, 2208 N. Prince Street was once “Shur Grow Behhen” Building Sales, originally owned by Leon Williams. “That was in the 1950s early ’60s, I believe. The business name is what’s on the record. There are no specific dates on this information,” Curry County Chief Deputy Assessor Candace London said Tuesday. The stadium at Clovis High School bears Williams’ name. “Leon Williams was a car...
Portales City Council members on Tuesday unanimously named city Fire Chief T.J. Cathey their interim city manager. We Americans are increasingly skilled at finding things that divide us, but last Monday legions of us found a common interest … even if only for a few minutes. The experts estimated that about 32 million residents of the continental United States lived in the path of that well-publicized total solar eclipse that spread like a beauty queen’s sash from Texas all the way to Maine. Untold millions more of us — present company included — made a pilgrimage to the path in hopes o...
