Freedom New Mexico It’s taken seven years, but the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team can finally say it has won a Lone Star Conference series from Angelo State. The Greyhounds clinched the three-game set with a 12-8 win over the Rams in the first game of Saturday’s twin bill at Greyhound Field, before ASU scored seven runs in the top of the first and salvaged the series finale 14-4. The teams had previously played four-game sets since ASU started its program in 2005. The Rams had gone 3-0-3 in series against the Gre...

PORTALES — There are tough ways to lose softball games, and then there’s Saturday’s Tarleton State-Eastern New Mexico University matchup at Zia Field. ENMU outplayed the TexAnns for much of the game, but Tarleton got grand slam home runs from Samantha Swanda in the fifth inning and Katie Welborn in the sixth to stun the Zias 10-9 and complete a three-game series sweep. ENMU (11-35, 2-13 South), which hasn’t had much go right this spring, took a 4-2 lead through three innings when senior first baseman Taylor Howar...

I occasionally, when preparing for class, find myself discovering things that I wish I had not found. I suppose that this is true for other educators, as well. Like the words from Don Henley's song, “Dirty Laundry,” it's a matter of “You don't really want to know what's goin’ on; you don't really want to find out how far it's gone.” This has happened a couple of times in the past several weeks, as we study ecology. Bees. Bees are disappearing at an alarming rate. The reasons are both complex and multiple; some of them are...
BLACKWATER DRAW — With several holes to fill on defense from last season, Eastern New Mexico University’s football team is hoping help may come from within. Defensive tackle Stephen Smith and strong safety Jason Serda, both from Albuquerque, may be able to plug a couple of those holes. Both players saw some duty last year, but were playing behind qualify teammates. Both showed well in Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage at Greyhound Stadium, ENMU coach Mark Ribaudo said. “Jason was making a lot of plays, and Steve had a...

It had to be done. Critical mass had been reached. Something had to go or my side of the closet would burst at the seams. I had long ago ruled out expanding into my wife’s side. When we moved in, she pointed out the three rods she would be taking and the one that was mine. I thanked her for granting me any space at all and really it was all I needed. I’ll admit I didn’t do myself any favors by not getting rid of some stuff six years ago when we last moved because it came a lot closer to filling up my little corner of the c...

Nicole Thornton was the Community Affairs Coordinator for the city of Portales until Friday. Her husband received orders from the Air Force back to Florida so the couple will be returning home. Thornton said there is no such thing as a typical day for the community affairs coordinator. “I enjoy that every day is different at this job,” she said. “It keeps it exciting with constant challenges.” Thornton said it’s important for a city to have a community affairs coordinator because it provides the city with representation and c...
