  • My turn: Trying to find my way

    Christina Calloway PNT staff writer

I really need to learn my directions in this town. You would think in a place where everything is literally five minutes away, you couldn't get lost but I do all the time. You can't ask the GPS where South Roosevelt Road U is and expect it to give you an exact location, so I had to rely on our primitive ways before technology, asking people. I think technology is a blessing and a curse. We have advanced so much with technology but we are killing human communication. Saturday I was trying to chase a fire I heard over the...

  • County, state to split courthouse carpet cost

    Robin Fornoff CMI Managing Editor

Curry County and the state will split the cost of installing new carpeting and hopefully get state court employees back into their second-floor offices soon. Commissioners approved the deal Tuesday during one of their occasional traveling meetings, this one held at the Grady Senior Center. Carpeting in the district court clerk's offices was soaked by an apparent air conditioner leak in mid-March, forcing employees to relocate to temporary offices on the third floor. County Manager Lance Pyle said some court employees are...

  • Buffet rules should be established

    Kevin Wilson CMI columnist

Give people a new communication tool, it changes the world. Make it accessible to everybody, and it changes the spelling. We got an example last night, after the Senate defeated the "Buffett Rule." Named after Warren Buffett, it goes on the premise that millionaires can afford to pay higher taxes, and would receive a minimum 30 percent tax rate. How effective it would be is up for debate, but it was clearly an election-year vote to allow Democrats to paint Republicans as friends of the 1 percenters and allow Republicans to...

  • Jury holds ad makers accountable

At times it seems nothing could possibly be shocking anymore when it comes to American politics. Sure, it's easy to turn on cable news talk programs and see Rachel Maddow, Ann Coulter, James Carville or Bill O'Reilly work themselves into a lather over something they absolutely can't believe came out of the mouth of a politician whose views disagree with their own. But that's theater. Trumped-up, overblown shock has become a staple of how we participate and consume politics. Just because the talking heads feign shock and...
