  • Portales woman shot to death

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 20, 2018

PORTALES — The victim of an alleged Thursday homicide was a “great soul,” a “go getter” and a “wonderful mother,” according to a friend. That’s how Cynthia Dominguez remembered her friend of 20 years, Erika Zamorano, who was found dead around 9:45 p.m. Thursday in a home on the 900 block of E. Second St. in Portales. Court records show that Zamorano had a wound over her left eye “consistent with a possible gunshot wound.” 34-year-old Gerardo Marquez, of Portales, was charged with Zamorano’s murder and booked into the Curry Co... Full story

The tennis match was rescheduled to 1:30 pm. Monday at the Clovis Community College courts. • Clash of baseball titans: Texico vs. Estancia

    Peter Stein|Updated Apr 20, 2018

TEXICO — File it under "h," maybe under "c." But file it somewhere under the "how cool is that" file. The answer is "pretty cool" whenever a team ranked No. 1 in the state plays one ranked No. 2 in the regular season. It will happen today — weather permitting — at Texico Field, when the top-ranked Wolverines baseball team hosts second-ranked Estancia in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Only the possibility of lightning can make this matchup more electric. When the prep baseball polls were released Tuesday throu... Full story

  • Workout on the corner

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 20, 2018

CLOVIS — Many know him as the energetic "workout guy," who can be seen hoisting a barbell or doing handstands at the northeast corner of the busy intersection of 21st and Norris streets. If you drive by at the right time, you might even see him swinging from the crosswalk light. His dog, Precious, is usually there watching. Joe Carter, 33, "aspires to inspire" with the very public exercises he calls "corner fitness," but the arrangement works well for him, too. The energy a... Full story

  • Never forget fires of the past

    Audra Brown|Updated Apr 19, 2018

For every people there are those events that mark the past. Any person who decides to continue farming or ranching, year after year, forgets the middling inconveniences, for both sanity and space. You’ll need that room to remember where all the trailers are parked and what you need to do with those steers. There are more things on the minds of those folks than they can probably fit. So, what do we remember? Well, there’s at least one thing that’s burned into a few brain...

  • Collateral damage of sin is devastating

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 19, 2018

Collateral damage is a general term for deaths, injuries, or other damage inflicted on unintended targets. Sometimes we speak of civilian causalities of a military operation and those are viewed as collateral damage. It is so sad to see innocent people killed and thus hundreds are affected. An example of collateral damage can be seen from the EF5 tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma, in 2013, killing 24 people and nine of those were children. Winds surpassed 210 miles an hour and...

  • Political correctness can obfuscate a good point

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 19, 2018

“The word ‘good’ has many meanings,” writes G. K. Chesterton. “For example,” he continues, “if a man were to shoot his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man.” Certainly a true observation, as far as it goes. I, for one, would like to know more about the character of the fellow’s grandmother before rushing to judgment. Nobody before or after Chesterton has done a better job of lining up words delightfull...

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 19, 2018

ELIDA — Baylee Oder's eight strikeouts in a dominating performance helped lead his Elida High baseball team past the Grady Bronchos, 12-2, in Game 2 of Thursday's 1A/2A-District 4/6 baseball doubleheader. The Bronchos took Game 1 in eight innings, 8-6. After Grady (4-8, 4-6) managed to find a way to win Game 1 in eight innings, despite blowing a six-run lead late, things swung heavily in the favor of Elida (3-7, 3-7) during the second game. Oder came out strong with six s...

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 19, 2018

On this date ... 1983: An abundant salamander crop was wreaking havoc with the drainage system at the Clovis wastewater treatment plant. Dikes around the lagoon had been damaged, and two local farmers who had contracts to use the stored water for irrigation were trying to lower the level as quickly as possible so repairs could be made. The challenge? The drain pipes kept filling with salamanders. Clovis farmer Dan Ware said he had cleaned out 20 feet of a 6-foot drain pipe pac...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Apr 19, 2018

CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission is going to take a second look at fee waiver requests, and possibly how to pay for the city services those fees are supposed to support. The commission decided on a unanimous vote in Thursday evening’s meeting to refer the process of fee waiver requests to the Revenue Review Committee later this year, with a caveat that it consider lodger’s tax funds to help defray various facility rental and street closure costs. The commission handles numerous requests for events, and they often requi...
