David Stevens and Kevin Wilson|Updated Apr 21, 2017

CLOVIS — The two men Clovis police found dead early Thursday morning may have been responsible for the deaths of each other, Police Chief Doug Ford said. “That’s a possibility,” Ford said. “We still have additional witnesses to interview before we come to any conclusions.” The bodies of David Lopez, 43, and Carlos Gallegos, 25, were found about 4:15 a.m. Thursday after police received a report of a man being shot in the back. Police said Lopez was found shot to death in an apa...

  • It's OK to ask questions, deal with honest doubt

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 21, 2017

One Easter years ago (almost two decades), I got to play the Apostle Peter in a community Easter cantata. I enjoyed it. For one thing, the music was really good; for another, I like Peter. I think everybody likes Peter. But, another apostle really high on my list (I suppose it’s OK to have favorite apostles?) might not make the top slots on many folks’ lists. He does with me. I’m speaking of the Apostle Thomas. I doubt that Thomas (See. Thomas and I get along already.) asked...

  • No amount of blood and sweat can prevent obsolescence

    Audra Brown|Updated Apr 21, 2017

We all know technology is obsolete before you even get to see it most of the time. You order that new phone and there’s already an upgrade before it gets to your door. This is important as a concept because there is a lot of technology on the farm. Mind you, it does tend to advance at a slightly slower rate, but it is nonetheless a mess when you realize just how useless a piece of equipment has become. There is both pleasure and pain that comes with the obsoleting of some c...

  • Woman's story shows riches of God's grace

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 21, 2017

The words of Jesus about treasure in heaven are well known. He said: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in nor steal, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21). I have told this story before but I write about it again due to a reader request. Her...

  • A look at the art of the yard sale

    Stephanie Losoya|Updated Apr 21, 2017

PORTALES — In the early hours of nearly any mild Saturday morning, the lines between junk and treasure are blurred. Whether they're rummage, yard or tag sales, the people who make them a weekend staple have their successes and failures. The key rule, according to former Clovis resident Grant McGee? "Don't get there early and don't get there too late. Garage sales originally began as "rommage" or "rummage," referring to unclaimed goods at shipyards and loading docks. As c...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Apr 21, 2017

CLOVIS — City commissioners on Thursday heard a presentation from lobbyist John Ryan on both the recent state legislative session and the political climate in Washington, D.C. Ryan, a former state legislator, followed the session for the city on a pro bono basis. “I learned about being on the outside, without having a vote, good parking spots and easy access,” Ryan said. “I think I prefer this role; it was a crazy session.” He envisions a May special session for a budget satisfying both the legislators and Gov. Susana Ma...
