  • Texico, Estancia split in battle of 3A elite

    Peter Stein|Updated Apr 21, 2018

TEXICO - After inclement weather interrupted the first game of Friday's Estancia-Texico baseball doubleheader, the skies lightened, the sun came out and the wind died down considerably for the nightcap. Fitting, because things brightened for the Wolverines, too. Though they lost the opener 4-1, they run-ruled the Bears 10-0 in the second game, salvaging a split in a matchup of the state's first- and second-ranked 3A teams. Both teams were certainly hoping for a sweep. But for...

  • Windy day gives way to rain

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 20, 2018

The wind blew hard enough Friday to knock over a street light - just a typical spring day on the High Plains. But then something magical happened. It rained. National Weather Service Meteorologist Clay Anderson said he received a call from a Melrose resident who told him Friday was the first time that community had seen rain since October. Clovis saw 2/10ths of an inch of moisture, improving its total for the year to a half inch. Portales recorded 6/10ths of an inch on... Full story

  • Impaired driver runs over round-about

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2018

CLOVIS — Round-abouts can be tricky even in the best of conditions. Add in impaired driving at dark, and you might have a situation like Thursday night when someone drove a pickup truck over the stone barrier at the center of the round-about at Norris Street and East Llano Estacado Boulevard. Clovis police responded around 10:15 p.m. to a report of a pickup truck crashing into the island there, with “half of the vehicle on the grass part of the round-about and the back end of the vehicle on the curb,” according to a crimi... Full story

  • Rams blank Moriarty to open district series

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2018

MORIARTY - Portales' 11-run surge in the closing innings helped the Rams seal a 15-0 win at Moriarty. "It was kind of a weird day. The wind was blowing hard, then it stopped, then it would blow again. We kinda had to keep grinding out runs in the early innings," Rams coach Dusty Nusser said. "Their pitcher (Justin Carmona) did a nice job of keeping us off-balanced, but then we put some at-bats together and then they took (Carmona) out after the sixth, and then we got to them...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Apr 20, 2018

CLOVIS - The Clovis City Commission, at a gridlock over which District 3 member would give up their slot on the Railroad Committee, went with the most trusted of executive decision makers. Helen Casaus called heads. She kept her seat, and Fidel Madrid stepped down in favor of Sandra Taylor-Sawyer. Heads was the coin flipped by City Manager Justin Howalt, and settled was one of the larger debates about what commission members serve on what lower boards and committees. The city...

ROSWELL — Friday’s Colt Classic in Roswell proved to be a tight battle at the top for several boys golf teams, but once again, it was the Clovis Wildcats coming out on top. The Wildcats (316) finished just nine strokes ahead of fourth place Artesia (325), and just 18 strokes ahead of seventh place Socorro (334).
