  • ENMU falls to Aggies

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

LAWTON, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico had plenty of evidence that Cameron’s Hayden Jaco was in the conversation as one of the Lone Star Conference’s best catchers. The Greyhounds found out how good the senior could be on the mound, as well. Jaco, Cameron’s regular backstop, had by far his best performance on the mound with a no-hitter to help the Aggies defeat ENMU 11-0 and earn a doubleheader sweep. The Aggies posted a four-game sweep in the series, topping the Greyhounds by a 10-0 count in Thursday’s series opener, 12-4 in F...

  • District softball starts

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

CLOVIS - It was a rough week for the Clovis softball team that lost its first four District 4-5A games in about 48 hours - two on Tuesday, two on Thursday - and has now dropped six straight while falling to 5-11 after a 3-0 start. District play begins Tuesday, Clovis hosted Carlsbad at the Wildcat Softball Complex for the start of district play for both teams, and it went all the Cavegirls' way. Carlsbad won the first game 22-3 and the nightcap 17-0. Gabby Aragon led the Caveg...

  • Tough day on the courts

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

Clovis and Portales tennis teams were in action Thursday with district battles against Lea County foes. With the exception of the Ram girls, it wasn’t a great result for the local teams. Hobbs swept the Wildcats, beating the boys 6-3 and the girls 8-1. Against Lovington, it was an 8-1 win for the Portales girls and a clean sweep for the Lovington boys. In Clovis, the visiting Eagles swept all six doubles flights. Hobbs split the six singles boys flights with the Wildcats, and took five of the girls singles matches. The W...

  • Wolverine baseball has great weekend

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

TEXICO — To say it was a good week for Texico’s baseball team might be understating it. When you win three home games by a combined score of 58-0, fair to say it was a pretty good week. That’s what the Wolverines did, in a Friday doubleheader against Clayton and a Saturday solo game against Mora. They beat the Yellowjackets by the same 24-0 count in each of Friday’s game, then routed Mora 10-0 on Saturday. In Friday’s opener — also the District 7-2A opener for both Texico and Clayton — the Wolverines plated nine runs in...

  • Farewell, home

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

PORTALES - Friday marked the end of home games for the Eastern New Mexico softball team, which spent Friday honoring five seniors who were consistent contributors all season. But nationally-ranked teams tend not to care about things like that. Tarleton State, ranked 21st in Division II, cruised to 13-0 and 4-0 victories in the doubleheader at Greyhound Field. Those wins, combined with Thursday's 6-1 victory, gave the TexAnns a sweep to move their win streak to five and give...

  • Logan tops Foxes

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 20, 2019

PORTALES — Plenty of area schools saw plenty of highlights from their track and field stars Thursday at Greyhound Stadium. But both the boys and girls meets were stories of Longhorns besting Foxes. Logan topped Fort Sumner in both meets, with the Longhorn boys edging the Foxes 83-81 and the Longhorn girls taking a more comfortable victory of 111-73.5 over the Vixens. In boys action, the Longhorns took three of the four relays and had three athletes take five individual first-place finishes. Dayson Day won the 100 (11.35) and...

  • Texico replaces coach

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Apr 20, 2019

Bob Gilbreath was sure he could do better. He had just watched Clovis High’s football team end in a scoreless tie with Amarillo’s Palo Duro and thought he could’ve brought victory for the Wildcats had he been their kicker that night in 1984. He was certain he could’ve ended the stalemate by kicking a game-winning field goal. So the Clovis High senior went to Eric Roanhaus, then beginning his seventh season as Wildcats head football coach, and asked for a tryout. “I knew I could do it,” Gilbreath said. It was the Monday after...

  • 'Cats drop 4-5A trio

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Apr 20, 2019

CARLSBAD - Tuesday's District 4-5A opener for Carlsbad and Clovis seemed like three baseball games rolled into one. Carlsbad won the seven-inning game 15-5 at Clovis' Bell Park, notching its first district win in the process. But, within that victory seemed to be a trio of mini-games playing out separately. The first stage saw Carlsbad go up 8-0, seemingly on its way to a lopsided win. Clovis won the second stage 5-0, marching steadily along the middle-inning comeback trail...

  • Clovis sweeps home track meet

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Apr 20, 2019

CLOVIS - There the trophies stood, just waiting to be won. They were the winners' spoils of Thursday's Wildcat Relays at Leon Williams Stadium and they were perched atop a table resting diagonally on the football field's 31-yard line. Pretty good field position if you're the Wildcat football team on a scoring drive. But well after 10 p.m. Thursday, with the once-ideal temperatures having fallen, it seemed like the trophies were there forever. If those trophies could talk,...
