PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Shawn Scanlan didn’t know the team he coached on Saturday in the High Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. He didn’t really expect the team he saw on Sunday. Dominating a good opponent from start to finish, the Greyhounds (4-6) thrashed St. Mary’s 79-41 to gain a split in the two-day, 18-team, 18-game event played at UNLV. It was the only win for the four Lone Star Conference representatives in the event (1-7). The Hounds were trounced by Pittsburg State 83-63 on...
In worship on a Sunday just before Christmas several years ago, I found myself gazing at the front of the sanctuary watching silhouetted shepherds themselves gazing upward in wonder, one of them pointing toward a brightly shining star. The fact that the star itself was just a few feet away from the cross also displayed before us was a poignant reminder that in God's wisdom Bethlehem and Golgotha are forever linked, two sides of the same wondrous story of God’s love. The B...
Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of five stories highlighting the top Portales-area sports stories of the year. Jeff Gillespie maintained in preseason that his youthful Floyd football team had a long ways to go to contend for a state championship. “Melrose is the team to beat in six-man football,” he said in August. “(Junior Carlos) Ruiz has the same type of ability as the (Fide) Davalos kid that was here (several years ago). But they’ve got other players that are capable. “I think they’ll be the favorites the... Full story
Dear Santa, Let me begin by saying what a pleasure it is to make contact with you again, after so many years. I’ve got a lot to ask of you this year, and I thought I’d make those wishes known to you through the media reach of the Portales News-Tribune, rather than overwork your mail clerks. I want to ask for a few things for myself, some things for the good people of Portales and Clovis and even some gifts for people I don’t know — for what is better than to give to those who expect nothing from you? Please give the citizens... Full story
Granted, it is not the sexiest subject in the world, not the kind of thing that gets people het up enough to write letters to the editor. Yet there are few things more vitally important to understanding the world and our role in it. I’m talking about history and the teaching thereof. And if you keep rolling your eyes, your face is going to freeze like that. Not that I’m surprised. We are a historical people, a nation of short memories and cherished myths. For us, history doe...

The south county has hundreds of acres of irrigated crops each year and are grateful for the underground water. When we have a year with good fresh rain on crops and pastures it helps out tremendously. It also makes the expense of farming cheaper. The crops are beter than usual this year and there have been some good averages. Most harvesting has gone well the past couple of weeks and will soon all be done — if the weather stays good. Sympathy Mavis and Weldon Carmichael received a call a few days ago about the death of o... Full story

One of the timeless debates in this country is over gun-control laws and their efficacy. Gun-control advocates often cite the ease with which a person can purchase a firearm from retail outlets and worry that such outlets are arming criminals in huge numbers. Lawsuits have been filed against many wholesalers and retailers alleging their marketing practices make it easy for criminals to get guns. These advocates continually push for more restrictions on firearm purchases in vain attempts to keep guns from criminals and others...
When Feb. 1 comes around, voters from across Roosevelt County will be picking their school board representatives. Voters in Portales districts, however, will have a few more choices. Five people are running for two open district spots on the Portales school board, while candidates for the positions in Dora, Floyd and Elida are running unopposed for their positions. Three candidates will be competing for the spot in District 3 — Christie Carter, Alan Garrett and Jerry Partin. The winner will replace Steve Davis, who moved o...
As sunlight pokes through the cracks in the foundation of the city-owned Youth Recreation Building, Parks and Recreation Director Rob Carter delivers a laundry list of reasons why he thinks the building should be demolished. The tiles are cracked, the roof leaks and there is no electricity. When it rains, he said, the 5,000-square-foot building turns into a giant puddle of trash, exercise equipment and who-knows-what else. Carter and the Parks and Recreation Board sought approval last week from the Clovis City Commission to...
In his last meeting as a District 2 commissioner Chad Davis made his presence felt. Davis, the outgoing commissioner for District 2, proposed an amendment to change the way each district is funded for road repairs from state legislators and the state highway department. Newly elected David Sanders will be the District 2 commissioner in January. The previous system funded each district based on the miles of roads in each district. Davis said the old system provided 33 percent funding for District 3, 31 percent funding for... Full story

A small caravan set out east from Clovis Sunday night on a secret mission. Their first target was an unsuspecting family of five a little down on their luck. Along for the ride were local radio personalities, fire department personnel and even a small squad of elves. This was the Secret Santa team, and they were about to give $2,000 worth of gifts to a Texico family, the Vegas. Several programs like these in the area were organized this season to help impoverished families. The crew knocked on the door of the small blue house... Full story

The Curry County Commission on Tuesday shunned a motion to increase salaries by 13 percent for newly elected officials, saying a restrictive budget would make pay hikes fiscally irresponsible. County Sheriff Roger Hatcher introduced the motion, saying he believes elected officials deserve more money. “We have some of the best elected officials in the state,” said Hatcher, who ironically would not be affected by a pay hike because he is not newly elected. The issue never reached a vote because Hatcher withdrew the motion whe...
