Tammy Waters organized it and passed it on to Sabrina Farmer and Sabrina passed it on to me," Yancy said. Yancy believes "only prayer can change the situations...
My laptop computer went mute recently. I can’t tell you exactly when, but I’m sure it lost its voice several days before I noticed it had lost its voice. Its speakers, I knew — or thought I knew — were fine; they just were not speaking. As emergencies go, it was way down the list from a house fire and just maybe a bit above being subjected to another smarmy ad on TV by a politician going low to assure you that he is not a low-life politician or, at least, not as slimy as his d...
This has been a tough year for losses. In February, my husband Wayne lost his brother, George, to Alzheimer’s. Then, a day before the fifth anniversary of my dad’s passing, Wayne’s dad, George Jeston Head, died, leaving us mired in a pit of grief. There are so many similarities between our two fathers. Both had very distinct visions of right and wrong. Both served their countries proudly, without question. Both were spiritual men of honor and integrity, who loved their famil...

PORTALES – Saturday's regular-season-ending Lone Star Conference softball doubleheader at Greyhound Softball Field carried a bit more weight for Texas A&M-Kingsville than Eastern New Mexico University. While the Greyhounds clinched the final spot in this week's 10-team, single-elimination LSC tournament with a 4-2 win in Friday's series opener, Kingsville still had a chance to jump up a couple of notches, and the Javelinas did just that with a 6-4, 3-1 sweep. ENMU (25-29, 17-2...
CLOVIS – Melrose in Class 1A and Texico in Class 2A expect to make some noise in this weekend’s small-school state track competition at the University of New Mexico track facility in Albuquerque. Melrose’s girls are the defending 1A state champions by a nearly 40-point margin over Gateway Christian, while the boys came in fourth last season. Texico tied...
PORTALES – About the only thing that was going to keep Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team from getting into this week’s Lone Star Conference tournament was a four-game sweep at the hands of Lubbock Christian on the final weekend. The Greyhounds took care of that little item in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader, erasing a 6-0 deficit with two big innings and holding on for a 13-9 win over the Chaparrals. LCU (31-19, 29-19 LSC) took the nightcap 19-9, erasing an 8-4 deficit in the final three innings, before...
Portales High School drama teacher Melody Gallagher jokes that she recruits and retains drama students with the promise of "afterschool snacks and juice boxes." Fifty members of that flourishing PHS drama department are preparing to open their spring musical, "Into the Woods Jr." at 6 p.m. Friday in the Performing Arts Center at...
Joe Biden lies. He stumbles. He has the beginnings of dementia. Everything Fox News says about his incompetence and his horrible domestic and foreign policies is absolutely true. Everyone knows America will be more prosperous and safe when he is no longer in the White House. But Joe Biden isn’t leaving. He’s decided he can run for re-election in 2024 for one simple reason – the Republican Party nomination is in the pocket of Donald Trump. I’m not a Never Trumper. I voted f...
A spate of recent shootings serve as a depressing reminder that accidentally ringing the wrong doorbell, driving to an incorrect residence, or mistakenly getting into the incorrect vehicle can be deadly. In Kansas City, 16-year-old honors student Ralph Yarl mistakenly arrived at the wrong home while looking for his younger siblings. There he was shot and severely wounded by 84-year-old Andrew Lester, a chain of events that shocked residents and sent citizens and the country on...
On this date ... 1937: About 50 area residents attended the quarterly meeting of the Eastern New Mexico Chamber of Commerce. Speaker Richard Hindley, manager of the Clovis Evening News-Journal, told the crowd it needed to keep track of what was going on in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and be “adequately represented” at state meetings. “We shouldn’t get sore when we are left out if we don’t go to the meetings at which plans of statewide interest are laid,” Hindley said. Representatives of Hobbs, Carlsbad, Roswell, Artesia, Ta...
Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that could prevent taxing entities from funding projects that voters had already rejected. The bill is aimed at Amarillo, which in 2022 attempted to fund renovations to its Civic Center after voters said no to a similar plan just two years earlier. It’s a shame a law like that would need consideration. What kind of public officials would ask voters what they think, then make them fund the project anyway if they don’t like the answer? Oh, wait. Isn’t that how Curry County managed to bu...

It was a packed house Saturday night at Greyhound Arena for the Aaron Watson concert. With seats full and the floor filled with dancing, it was a good night for enjoying country music. The show kicked off at 7 p.m. with Jenna Paulette, who wasn't an artist I was familiar with at the beginning of the night. However, her sound and engaging performance made me know who she was by the end. Following Paulette on the stage was Roosevelt County's own, Will Banister. His performance...
