Multiple standards no good for policy One of the biggest problems with our immigration policy is the policy itself is different for different countries. If you are escaping from Cuba and you set foot on dry land, you cannot be sent back. Why do Cubans get special treatment? Because the U.S. doesn’t like Castro? Immigration laws should be the same for every country, not based on whether you come from a Communist country or just one that is economically depressed. Out of interest, how many other countries allow illegal immigran...

  • Immigration can’t be cast in black, white

    Steve Chapman

The immigration protests held across the country on Monday serve as a perfect Rorschach test: What reaction did you have to the sight of hundreds of thousands of immigrants marching down American streets, calling on Congress to accommodate them? Dismay? Ambivalence? Admiration? A lot of political debates turn on facts and arguments. This one is mostly a matter of competing emotions. Among many conservatives, the emotion is outrage. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said the protests “make me mad.” Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., fum...

  • St. Michael's downs PHS in semifinals

    PNT staff

ALBUQUERQUE — The Portales Lady Rams will have to wait another year for a shot at a Class 3A state tennis championship. Portales played competitively for the most part, but couldn’t match Santa Fe St. Michael’s depth on Saturday in dropping a 6-3 semifinal decision to the Lady Horsemen at Sierra Vista Tennis Complex. Junior Ella Erf and sophomore Bethany Self provided the only wins for the top-seeded Lady Rams, remaining unbeaten for the season in both singles and doubles. Erf defeated St. Mike’s Maria Lopez 6-0, 6-1 at No....

  • Portales golfers set sights on state crown

    PNT staff

If how they practiced during the week means anything, coach Patrick Crowley believes the Portales Rams are ready to make a run at the Class 1-3A boys state golf tournament championship on Monday and Tuesday at UNM South in Albuquerque. Portales’ quintet of senior Matthew Parkey, junior Jefferson Powers and freshmen Donavin Sanchez, William Archibeque and Rick Bergman left Saturday for the 36-hole event which tees off at 8 a.m. Monday. The Rams come into the tourney as one of the favorites, although that in itself doesn’t mea...

  • Cinco Celebration

    Helena Rodriguez

No Cinco de Mayo would be complete without the breaking of piñatas, colorful Mexican ballet folklorico dancers and plenty of festive fiesta foods. Hundreds of people attended the Portales Cinco de Mayo celebration at Lindsey Park on Saturday which featured all of the above, plus performances by Native American dancers from Farmington and brought in by Eastern New Mexico University, Christian songs by Antoinette Urioste, a performance by the Unbreakable rap group, Spanish songs by Andy Mason and more. “Some people think Ci...

  • White House needs changes in policies, not faces

Editorial We’ll abstain from clichés about rearranging deck chairs, but the personnel changes at the White House in recent weeks, while they may matter greatly to inside-the-Beltway pundits and the immediate families of those involved, don’t suggest that significant policy changes are in the offing. That’s unfortunate, because changing policy in significant ways would do much more to salvage the final two-plus years of the president’s time in office than having different people do the same old things. Domestically, as Grove...

  • Bob V ila never had it this tough

My wife has been confused throughout most of our 24 years of marriage. Somehow she’s under the impression that she married Bob Vila but she actually got something more akin to Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. She’s been undeterred by my lack of skills with a hammer and saw, however, and continually comes up with new home improvement projects. The advent of satellite/cable TV and all the home improvement shows hasn’t helped a bit. She sees some bubble-headed blonde on TV being taught to give her bathroom the look of a Roman pal... Full story

  • Words for the wise from the not-so-wise

    Freedom Newspapers

Here at the Trivia Memorial Library (Motto: If you wish you were young again, think algebra), we’ve been gathering thought-provoking quotes from icons so that someday we can publish them and make big bucks. These samples are gleaned from politicians, industry leaders and bureaucrats, followed by movie stars and sports figures. •“That lowdown scoundrel deserves to be kicked to death by a jackass, and I’m just the one to do it.” (A former Texas senator who shall remain nameless) •“Outside of the killings, Washington ha...

  • Monkey business

With millions of tiny ink dots, some smaller than a speck of sand, Valerie Romano pays homage to mankind’s closest living relative — chimpanzees. The former Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University instructor stumbled upon her greatest artistic inspiration late in life. She was 45 years old when she volunteered to work in the world’s largest sanctuary for former laboratory chimps in Alamogordo. Her experience there yielded 21 intimate ink and acrylic portraits of the chimps. “I was really struggling with my... Full story

  • Clovis standout refining game for WNBA

    CNJ Staff

Former Clovis High School standout Cisti Greenwalt is trying to get tough. Greenwalt is in the Sacramento Monarchs’ training camp for the second straight year, and she hopes to make the final roster this time around by getting mean in the post. “She needs to be more aggressive,” Monarchs coach John Whisenant said. “She goes up for a rebound once, and if she doesn’t get it, she stands. She needs to bang until she gets it or it goes the other way.” The 6-foot-5 former Texas Tech star was cut by the Monarchs last year and sp... Full story

  • Buffs' Rush sets state mark

    Freedom Newspapers

Melrose’s Cedar Rush leads during the first lap of the 800 meters. Rush won the event in a record time of 1:58.53. (De Baca County News: Scott Stinnett) ALBUQUERQUE — Melrose senior Cedar Rush normally doesn’t run the 800. On Friday, he ran it and he ran it well. Rush won the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.53, a new state record. The previous record of 2:00.24 was set by Fort Sumner’s Roel Canales in 2003. “I was really trying to concentrate on my stride,” Rush said. “I was trying to make my stride consistent. “After I cros...

  • West Mesa rides arm of top starter

    CNJ Staff

How Mustangs senior Gabby Parra goes, West Mesa goes. Parra, who has signed to play at the University of New Mexico, has pitched every game this season for the Mustangs and, so far, things have gone nearly perfectly. “If you have Randy Johnson,” Mustangs coach Leonard Garcia asked, “why would you pitch anybody else?” West Mesa’s and Parra’s records are one in the same — 23-2. Accordingly, the Mustangs nabbed the top-seed in the Class 5A state tournament. West Mesa hosts Clovis at 11 a.m. today. Parra, the reigning Gato...

Cruce pitched a complete game shutout in an 8-0 victory against Carlsbad in April. Cruce’s gem gave the Cavemen, the state tournament’s top-see... Full story
