LOVINGTON — Clovis High baseball coach Richard Cruce said in preseason the Wildcats’ eight pre-district games would be a chance to see what kind of team they have before District 4-5A play begins in early June. In Tuesday’s season opener, they found they have some work to do. Lovington broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run fourth, then added two more in the fifth and handed the Cats a 7-3 setback. “It’s a tough way to start, but we’re trying to work to get to district play and into the playoffs,” Cruce said. Freshman Will...
LOVINGTON — Portales High is going into an unexpected spring sports vacation beginning on Monday, but the PHS track boys made their final meet before that a strong one. The state is shutting down Portales schools for two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols, but the Rams turned in a strong performance on Friday in winning Lovington’s Wildcat Relays. Portales won 13 of the 20 events, including a sweep of all five relay races, and finished with 116 points to 89 for Lovington in the four-school event. The Rams were the only one of...
ROSWELL - Texico's girls shot a 367 team score and ran away from the field on Thursday in the Coyote Invite golf tournament, hosted by Roswell High at New Mexico Military's golf course. Clovis High's girls came in second in a field of five full teams, shooting 391 to edge out Lovington by four strokes. Meantime, Clovis Christian claimed second place in the boys division with a four-man total of 325. Lovington took team honors at 292, with Roswell High third at 336 and Clovis...
ALBUQUERQUE — Melrose’s girls struggled to find the bucket on Thursday. Meantime, top-seeded Roy/Mosquero suddenly found its touch from the free throw line down the stretch. That helped turn things in the Lady Blue’s favor, and they pulled away by hitting 13-of-15 free throws in the final five minutes for a 44-38 win in the Class 1A girls state championship game at The Pit. The Lady Blue had gone 5-for-15 from the stripe prior to that. Senior Riley Clavel and sophomore Tanna Crisp combined for 33 points as Roy/Mosquero (15-0...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University has finalized its 2021 football schedule. According to a release from the school this week, the Greyhounds are slated to play an 11-game slate, including seven Lone Star Conference matchups, after missing the 2020 campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s going to be great having six home games at Greyhound Stadium,” first-year ENMU coach Tye Hiatt said in the release. “There haven’t been many times throughout my coaching career that I’ve had the opportunity to play at home...
ALBUQUERQUE - The run finally ended for the Melrose Buffaloes on Thursday. Top-seeded Magdalena scored the final six points of the first half, then pulled away in the third period and handed the Buffs a 56-43 loss in the Class 1A boys state championship game at The Pit. The Steers (15-0), in their first year in 1A after dropping down a class, ended Melrose's three-year title run behind 19 points from junior guard Joran Mirabal and 14 from sophomore guard Kael Stephens. "The...
SANTA ROSA — Portales High girls coach Wade Fraze said any of about six teams could’ve been seeded No. 1 in this year’s Class 4A state tournament. Gallup, which was given the fourth seed, certainly looked like a candidate on Thursday. Junior post Hailey Long scored 24 points to lead three Lady Bengals in double figures, and Gallup rode a fast start to a 77-63 win over top-seeded PHS in a 4A semifinal matchup played at Santa Rosa H.S. The Lady Bengals (14-1) won the championship on Saturday morning with a 63-51 victory over...
CLOVIS — Jim Turnbough liked to fish when he had the spare time. He also liked to go square dancing when he had the time. But most of Turnbough’s time went to what friends and family said he was born to do, teach agriculture. Turnbough, who died April 21 at age 87, spent 30 years teaching agriculture and the FFA mantra — learning to do, doing to learn, learning to live, living to serve. “Jim was born to be a teacher,” said Betty Turnbough, who spent 35 years as his wife after the two reconnected at a Rogers High School re...
Museum only lacks promotion Regarding the “Museum under discussion” article published April 28 in The News: I absolutely and vehemently oppose moving the Pappy Thornton Museum from its current location. I frequently go to Ned Houk Park and am always surprised at the number of people who are there. On the south side of the park, there is a walking trail, access to off-road vehicle recreation, the disc golf course, a fishing pond, and a concert pavilion. To get to these well-utilized features you drive right by the Pappy Tho...
I realize there are other issues higher on his priority list, but I hope President Joe Biden clarifies the federal government’s position on the enforcement of marijuana laws before legal sales begin here next year. New Mexico was the 18th state to legalize adult marijuana use, and all of those states have a conflict with the federal government. But the situation in southern New Mexico is unique because of the Border Patrol checkpoints along all of our highways. Kyle Williamson, special agent in charge of the El Paso Sector o...
I have renewed respect for Keith Ellison. The former congressman and current Attorney General of Minnesota appeared on “60 Minutes” recently and said he didn’t charge Derek Chauvin with a hate crime because “we only charge those crimes that we had evidence that we could put in front of a jury to prove.” In other words, they didn’t find the requisite hate. Ellison did something I would not have expected him to do, given his past comments and actions. He honored the law, honore...
Its Constitution fixed the value of African Americans at three-fifths that of other humans. Its bloodiest war was over whether they should be enslaved. It has no institution — not one — that is free of racial discrimination. Yet, we are supposed to take seriously those who now ask if America is a racist country? It seems to have obsessed many of us, this shallow question with the obvious answer, since it was raised by a recent speech from Tim Scott, the only black Rep...
Decades ago my sister Maureen called the Republican Party “The Stupid Party.” Today, the Party of Lincoln — the Party of Reagan — is again proving her right. Instead of concentrating on retaking the House next year and regaining control of the Senate, the GOP is looking backward and engaging in intra-party squabbles. Instead of uniting to attack — and stop — President Biden’s plans to turn the U.S. into the United Socialist States of America, the GOP is still fighting over...
If Joe Biden wanted to spend massively in response to a nearly unprecedented public health emergency, he was elected too late. The conventional wisdom justifying Biden’s new FDR-sized ambitions is that the country is in crisis, and he has to meet the proverbial moment, which can only be done with 13-digit spending bills. The truth is, though, that there is no crisis, and there is no moment. There’s only an excuse, an occasion, and a procedure. The excuse is the supposed dow...
Dear children and grandchildren, Thank you. And we’re sorry. Thank you for the $28 trillion (and counting) that we borrowed from you. But borrowed isn’t really honest, is it? You had no say in the matter. It’s more accurate to say we took it from you without your consent or even knowledge. And for that, we’re sorry. We’d like to tell you it was all because of an emergency, because of the worst pandemic to hit this country in a hundred years. Some of it was, but much of it — more than $20 trillion of it — wasn’t. Sure,...
CLOVIS — Two years worth of purple pride will be honored next month, as the Clovis Municipal Schools Foundation and Alumni Committee have announced their 2020 and 2021 slates for Hall of Honors Awards. The 10 award recipients will be honored at a 12:30 p.m. June 12 luncheon at the Clovis Civic Center. The awards recognize and honor former graduates of Clovis High School whose achievements, strengths of character, and citizenship serve as models to inspire and challenge today's students. The 2020 Hall of Honor inductees i...
CLOVIS — Airport Director James Harris provided an update on the Clovis Regional Airport’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) construction project to the Civil Aviation Board during its regular meeting on Tuesday. Having the federal agency at the airport is a major step for Clovis, as it will not only make air travel more convenient for patrons, but will generate revenue for the airport by providing necessary infrastructure to service travelers going to and from Cannon Air Force Base. The construction phase of the...
PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Road Department will begin work Tuesday on South Roosevelt Road 6, according to a county release. Work on the road between South Roosevelt Roads K and L is anticipated to take four weeks. The project, funded as part of the 20201 Local Government Road Fund, will enhance the portion of road from dirt to chip seal. Residents are asked to drive slowly and watch out for equipment and workers. Information: 575-356-5942 or 575-356-5307....
CLOVIS — Clovis Community College’s trustees took care of the most important business before the college’s first in-person graduation in two years — the graduation list — in its Wednesday meeting. The commencement, scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Curry County Events Center, will honor 2020 and 2021 graduates, as no 2020 ceremony was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Charles Nwankwo said the college was moving ahead with the in-person graduation based on state public health orders for turquoise counties....
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department has informed the village of Texico it has identified the forever chemicals of PFAS in one of its water system wells. According to an April letter from the NMED’s Drinking Water Bureau, drinking water in the system was sampled Dec. 16 and Feb. 9, and sample results came back for 28 unique PFAS compounds. There is no enforceable drinking water standard for PFAS in New Mexico. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a Lifetime Health Advisory for two PFAS com...
CLOVIS — Pending changes to the state’s Liquor Control Act would allow restaurants with valid beer and wine licenses to convert them into beer, wine and spirits licenses — what is now known as a restaurant liquor license. The state did give municipalities an opportunity to opt out if they saw fit, and the Clovis City Commission declined to do so in its Thursday night meeting. City Attorney Jared Morris told the commission that passage of House Bills 255 and 303 and Senate Bill 2 also altered the Liquor Control Act to inclu...
PORTALES - The last 14 months haven't been easy for anybody with the COVID-19 pandemic, and businesses are certainly no exception. But Roosevelt County businesses got Friday night to celebrate their successes in the last year-plus of struggles, with the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce holding a scaled-back annual banquet at Eastern New Mexico University's Campus Union Building. Honored at the event were three individuals and four businesses, including El Rancho as the business...
SANTA FE — New Mexico's newest update of the “Red to Green” framework shows most of the state is in the vaunted turquoise designation, and they'll stay there until at least June 2. But all is far from well, with Curry and Roosevelt counties reporting 63 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in the last four days and three local schools returning to remote learning as a result. Portales High School was the latest closure to in-person learning announced Friday, the same day Melrose announced a one-week remote learning period and... Full story
PORTALES — After more than a year with almost no athletic competitions, Eastern New Mexico University will search for a new athletic director for 2021-22. Matt Billings, who joined the university last January, announced his resignation at the end of his contract in a school release. Billings, who came to ENMU from Portland State, said he plans to return to the Northwest to be closer to family. “I appreciate the opportunity to work with the student-athletes, coaches and staff at Eastern,” Billings said in the release. A natio...
