  • Officials: College plan would create opportunities

    Joe Siess, Staff writer|Updated May 20, 2021

CLOVIS — Paying for college prevents many from pursuing higher education, but for those who did manage to close in on a degree, such as two local nursing students Karla Beachum and Sydney Romero, the experience would have been far less of a struggle if tuition were not a factor. As part of a federal plan slated to cost around $1.8 trillion, the Biden administration's proposed American Families Plan would invest taxpayer dollars to fund two years of tuition free community college, partially eliminating one of the greatest o...

  • PED rescinds order for Portales High

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 15, 2021

PORTALES — Since New Mexico public schools went to full re-entry April 5, just two schools have seen a mandatory two-week closure due to COVID-19 cases. The most recent is Portales High School ... or it was Portales High School. The Public Education Department rescinded its mandate to close the school for two weeks Monday, after finding an error was made in its consideration of rapid responses. Now the most recent is Yucca Middle School in Clovis. The PED announced Tuesday that Yucca, which closed voluntarily to in-person l...

  • Too many choices, too exhausting

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 11, 2021

I read something recently that proposed an interesting conundrum (and gave me an excuse to use “conundrum,” which is one of my favorite words): We humans love choices, but we hate making decisions. There is no question I agree with the latter part of that statement. After all, I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who would rather keel over from hunger than agree on a restaurant. “I don’t care. Where do YOU want to eat?” “Whatever you want is fine with me.” “You d...

  • Faith: Shame we forget how much grace we receive

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 11, 2021

I’ve long ago forgotten where I found the tale I’m about to relate, but I like it. Personally, I very much doubt that it’s factual; it does, however, hold a lesson or two that are true indeed. As the story goes, a fellow was walking down the street one day when he saw a hand-lettered sign in a yard: “Talking Dog: Five Dollars.” Quite curious, the man walked up to the front door of the house and knocked. When an ordinary-looking fellow answered, the guy standing on the porch...

  • Fort Sumner Chamber initiates signage project for graves

De Baca County News, Syndicated content|Updated May 11, 2021

FORT SUMNER — The Chamber of Commerce board of directors has initiated a new interpretive signage project, which will offer historical background information for several graves within the Old Fort Military Cemetery. The cemetery garners thousands of tourists each year and is touted as one of the most visited cemeteries in the United States. The initiative is partially funded by a Nuestro Vecinos grant from Plateau. Signage will highlight the graves of Henry McCarty (alias Billy the Kid) and his pals Tom O'Folliard and C...

  • Goddard topples Lady Cats with five in seventh

the Staff of The News|Updated May 11, 2021

CLOVIS — Roswell Goddard scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie and defeat Clovis High’s softball team 14-10 on Saturday, completing the sweep of a high-scoring doubleheader at Lady Wildcat Field. Goddard, playing its first games of the season, won the opener 23-10. The Lady Wildcats (0-3) took a 9-8 lead in Game 2 when junior Chastity Hardy led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to right field and continued home on a Lady Rockets throwing error. Goddard tied it in the sixth on a two-out RBI dou...

  • CHS swimmers eye state

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated May 11, 2021

CLOVIS - Clovis High sophomore Shyann Kissinger is hoping her experience will help in Thursday's state girls swimming competition at Albuquerque Academy. After all, she's one of the few Wildcats or Lady Wildcats who can rely on it. "I'm excited to see everybody swim," she said. "I'm excited for the younger ones." That's right - as a sophomore, Kissinger is actually one of the "older ones." The Lady Cats are also sending sophomores Chloe Lee and Chara May, freshman Jakoda Culle...

  • Cats earn rare victory over Robertson

the Staff of The News|Updated May 11, 2021

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Clovis High’s boys scored a rare win over traditional state tennis power Las Vegas Robertson on Monday, beating the Cardinals 7-2 in a dual match. Meantime, the Lady Wildcats absorbed a 7-2 setback at the hands of the Lady Cardinals. In the boys dual, the Wildcats lost only at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles, although both were fairly competitive matches. The Cats also won super-tiebreakers with sophomore David Case at No. 2 singles and with freshmen Titus Wampler and Topher Oaks at No. 3 doubles. For the...

  • Portales tabs Ruth Chavez for AD post

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 11, 2021

PORTALES — Ruth Chavez came back to Portales High School in 2020 to coach the Ram volleyball program for a second time. Now, she’ll coach the entire PHS athletic program, with an upcoming promotion to the district’s athletic director position. The move was announced during Monday night’s Portales Municipal Schools board meeting, with Superintendent Johnnie Cain telling the board, “I think she’ll be a really good addition.” Chavez, who has also spent time as a track and field coach, said she is looking forward to having inp...

  • Opinion: Census report should be wakeup call

    Paul Gessing, Guest columnist|Updated May 11, 2021

The US Census Bureau recently released what can only be described as some disturbing data regarding the future of New Mexico. Notably, while the state’s population grew by just 2.8 percent over the past decade, each of our neighbors saw double-digit population growth with the exception of Oklahoma, which still bested New Mexico with 5.5 percent growth. That should be a wake-up call for New Mexico’s Legislature and Gov. Lujan Grisham. A report put out by New Mexico’s Legis...

  • Opinion: Glad I have as much choice as I do

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated May 11, 2021

It's good to have choices. The continuing COVID-19 overreactions of New Mexico's politicians mean I've spent much less time and money in New Mexico than I would have normally. Why would I go where businesses are either closed or operating with restricted capacity when I have other options? I prefer to go where businesses can decide whether they'll force customers to wear a mask, rather than where a one-size-fits-all mandate declares businesses aren't allowed to decide for...

  • Opinion: Use of Signal app troubling to open government

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated May 11, 2021

The use of a secure communications app by the Children, Youth and Families Department that routinely encrypts and deletes communications between staffers is more than troubling. One child advocacy organization calls it “outrageous.” The attorney general says it’s “highly concerning.” And an open government organization likens it to shredding public documents, raising the possibility it constitutes a crime. In contrast to standard texts or emails, which can be accessed by attorneys, lawmakers, reporters and the public un...

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Historical Preservation Division is conducting an online survey of New Mexicans about the future of historic preservation, according to a division news release. The survey, which began Monday and will run through June 10, will help create a 10-year plan for the state’s historical preservation activities. It can be accessed at nmhistoricpreservation.org “This is our opportunity to reach out and understand how we might be able to better serve the preservation needs for New Mexicans,” said Jeff Pappas,...

  • Police offer offroad rules

the Staff of The News|Updated May 11, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis Police Department has observed an upswing in the use of off-highway recreation vehicles operating in city streets, alleys and lots. The department anticipates that trend will continue as spring turns to summer and school breaks begin, and is responding with information about proper uses and places for the vehicles. A brochure available from any CPD officer on duty or at businesses selling off-road vehicles includes information on the state and local laws covering the vehicles. Additionally, the brochure i...

Clovis MainStreet was one of 10 recipients of Resilient Community Fund grants for community and economic development projects, according to a New Mexico MainStreet release. The grants are between $2,500 and $5,000 and require a match. In-kind services can be used, but at least half of the match must be in cash. Awarded projects “have a clear and stated impact for new, innovative, or ongoing efforts to mediate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and/or economic recovery efforts,” stated New Mexico MainStreet in a news rel...

  • Texico schools to resume

the Staff of The News|Updated May 11, 2021

TEXICO — Texico Municipal Schools will resume instruction Wednesday, following a water-related closure on Monday. Students were dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Monday, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page, after one of the village’s water wells that supplies the campus was out of order. The district canceled classes for Tuesday, citing no available timeline for repairs. A post around noon Tuesday confirmed Wednesday classes would resume as normal....

The Solar*Connect program includes an average additional monthly cost of $10.80, and is a way for companies and organizations to meet various renewable energy benchmarks. • Congratulations to CHS esport-sters

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Local columnist|Updated May 11, 2021

Entering a unique computer lab at Clovis High School recently, I tiptoed in and sidled up to Coach Andrew Tipton. It wasn't exactly like entering the bridge of Star Trek's USS Enterprise, but sort of felt like it. Perched in slick “gaming” chairs before large computer towers and oversized monitors, communicating through elaborate headsets and microphones were five young men. As they leaned forward, there was an intensity in not only their posture, but also in their urg...

  • Portales school board approves 2021-22 budget

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 11, 2021

PORTALES — Following a 30-minute explanation of two months of compressed planning, and what it meant for the year ahead, the Portales school board on Monday approved its 2021-22 budget. The budget, Finance Director Sarah Stubbs said, was largely similar to the prior year’s budget, with a rise in unit value just offsetting an enrollment drop of about 150 students. The budget of $27.186 million is a 0.2% increase over last year’s $27.13 budget. Stubbs said key differences included a 1% increase to retirement, a 1.5% cost of li...

  • CCC commencement Friday

CLOVIS - Commencement ceremonies are finally happening at Clovis Community College. Statewide COVID-19 restrictions prevented students from walking and being honored since fall 2019, but on Friday, the long wait should be over. The college will present 175 degrees to graduates at 6 p.m. in the Curry County Events Center, and Col. Robert Masaitis, commander of the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, will be the guest of honor at the ceremony. "We are...
