There were few empty seats in the theater as candidates sat at a table on the Yam's stage and responded one-by-one to questions read to them by Don Elder of KSEL radio. The event,...

  • Sunday Reader: More states move to decriminalize fentanyl test strips

Kaiser Health News, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2022

With time running out in the 2022 legislative session, Georgia lawmakers took up a bill to regulate raw milk. An amendment suddenly got tacked onto the House version of the bill, although the new wording had nothing to do with dairy. The language called for legalizing the use of strips that test drugs for fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid fueling a wave of fatal overdoses across the U.S. The amendment, said Sen. Jen Jordan, an Atlanta Democrat who sponsored it, was “a commonsense solution to save lives.” The revised mil...

  • Lots of memories in old newspaper building

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated May 14, 2022

Word came last week that the building where I spent a good portion of my youth was finally about to be repurposed. Soon, the Portales News-Tribune building will be home to an insurance company. Once we moved to town in 1970 I figured I needed a job and the only thing available to a young man was newspaper carrier or paperboy. The only problem was a paperboy had to be 12 to get on at the Portales News-Tribune. I applied anyway. I talked to a bespeckled man named Lewis Toland...

  • Opinion: Great news; but let's not celebrate yet

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2022

The recent federal court ruling to relieve the state from judicial oversight of its mental health system stemming from the Jackson lawsuit of 1987 is a huge victory for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, state officials and taxpayers. The governor estimates the case has cost the state $80 million during the last three decades. The federal class action lawsuit was filed against the state by parents of those with developmental disabilities who were being held at state-run institutions in Fort Stanton and Los Lunas. The court found...

  • Opinion: Supreme Court rapidly losing its legitimacy

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2022

To the Honorable Clarence Thomas, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States: Dear Sir: Have you ever met your wife? Yes, it’s an impudent question, but it seems justified by the speech you gave recently at a judicial conference in Atlanta and a question-and-answer session that followed. In an obvious reference to the bombshell leak of a draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, you bemoaned that institutions are being “bullied” and said the judiciary is threaten...

  • Opinion: Time to dispel myths about the pro-life movement

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2022

I was always a big fan of mythology. My particular favorite is Athena, also known as Minerva, goddess of wisdom. She is said to have sprung fully formed from her father Zeus’ head, which was probably a great relief for his wife Hera. Athena is a myth, but one that ironically calls us to examine the truth. Given what happened recently at the Supreme Court and its aftermath, I think it’s time to dispel some of the myths surrounding the pro-life movement. Myth: Pro-lifers onl...

  • Opinion: West already involved in Ukraine

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated May 14, 2022

We have forgotten John Quincy Adams’ admonition that “Americans should not go abroad to slay dragons they do not understand in the name of democracy.” I first heard that Americans were in charge of the war in Ukraine in an interview conducted last April with Le Figaro senior international correspondent Georges Malbrunot. Malbrunot claimed he had accompanied French volunteer fighters, and was surprised to discover that to be able to enter the Ukrainian army it’s the America...

  • Opinion: Fentanyl crisis will be long struggle

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2022

The United States is in the grips of a fentanyl crisis that doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. Yes, it’s important who owns Twitter, and interesting what some Republicans might have texted former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows after the 2020 election, but none of this matches the significance of a hideously insidious drug devastating American communities. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 100,000 Americans died of dru...

  • Opinion: CCC trustees right to proceed with caution, objectivity

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated May 14, 2022

Trustees at Clovis Community College on Monday spent 90 minutes privately discussing employee letters of “no confidence” aimed at college President Charles Nwankwo. Following that executive session, trustees voted to hire a third-party investigator in hopes of learning what prompted the letters before deciding if they will take action against the CCC leader they hired at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. No doubt some college supporters and staff were disappointed trustees left Nwankwo to continue his day-to-day duties w...

  • Buffalo calf born at Ned Houk

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated May 14, 2022

A recently born buffalo calf brings the city of Clovis' buffalo population at Ned Houk Park to nine. Russell Hooper, director of the Clovis Parks and Recreation department, says this is the second buffalo born in the past year at the park north of Clovis. "We didn't even know she was pregnant," Hooper said of the mother. Hooper said the calf was born April 23, saying it was the day after the "big fire" that burned some northern acreage of Ned Houk park. What's the calf's...
