Hunter of Roswell stated in his ruling that the injunction will remain in effect “pending final determination of the merits of this cause.” About 50 school districts, including most in eastern New Mexico, joined the lawsuit challenging the change. They have argued the mandate would result in budget shortfalls, essentially eliminate four-day sch...

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2024

State Rep. Randall Pettigrew jumped on the phone the same day Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced she was calling lawmakers back to Santa Fe for a special session in July. Pettigrew, a Republican who lives in Lovington in far Southeastern New Mexico — some 300 miles from the capital city — sought to find accommodations right away. “The Drury was booked, and La Fonda didn’t have anything for all the nights I wanted because I wanted to come in the day before,” he said, adding the unknown length of the session made booking a...

  • Faith: Jesus' act of sacrifice renders guilty innocent in wonderful truth

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 14, 2024

I have a good news-bad news scenario for you, and it comes complete with a few layers of each. It’s good news that the scenario I’ll mention is mostly hypothetical. But even better news is that what it illustrates is, I believe, deeply true. It’s bad news, and it pains me to tell you this, that you’re on death row, convicted for murder. I hope you think it’s good news that I was quite surprised to hear it and have always thought very highly of you. It’s good news, even though...

the Staff of The News|Updated May 14, 2024

GRANTS – At the end of the day, it just wasn’t in the cards for Portales High’s baseball team. The 15th-seeded Rams gave it a great shot in Friday’s opener of the best-of-3, Class 4A first-round playoff series, only to see Grants rally late for a 4-3 win. Saturday’s game turned out to be no contest. The Pirates (22-6) jumped on top 4-0 in the first inning, then finished off a 10-run rule win with six in the sixth to oust the Rams 13-3. “We started off bad and ended bad,” Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said of Saturday’s cl...

  • Opinion: Unconventional advice for grads

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2024

It’s that time of year, when just about every newspaper in the state gives front-page attention to at least one local graduation. They’re always a big deal, especially to those who walk across that ceremonial stage and make their families proud. It’s also the time when yours truly offers some less-than-conventional advice to those who are about to move on to bigger and better things: First, let’s dispel the notion that you can be anything you set your mind to becoming, because you can’t. If you’re short, you won’t likel...

  • Who knows why we do what we do

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated May 14, 2024

I’m often wondering “why?” about stuff. As a matter of fact, a buddy of mine said he’d get me a tombstone for when I’ve “gone on to Glory” that simply reads: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? I don’t remember many of the short stories the writer Raymond Carver penned, but I remember one single line from one of them: “Who knows why we do what we do.” I remember I got an answer to one wonderment I had straight from someone who’d done it. It was when I was working in “big-city” radio. It wasn’t small-town radio like I was used to. I ran t...

  • Opinion: Current protests reek of privilege, anti-semitism

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2024

It seems silly to write a column about the recent college protests. It’s not really news when privileged students who have never been in the line of fire and whose most pressing concern is what pronoun they’ll use on any given day decide to rise up against the establishment. And yet, here we are. Across the nation, college students have been raising their voices against what some call a “genocide” and others call “Zionist oppression.” They have been supported in their misgu...

  • Opinion: History rerunning at Mississippi

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated May 14, 2024

History on the rerun. Ghosts of Mississippi. Magnolia State maintains its horrendously racist image. Any of the statements could be used to describe the images shown across the nation at the University of Mississippi at Oxford. Dozens of students at the university’s flagship campus gathered to protest Israel’s war in Gaza and to call for the school to be transparent in its potential dealings with Israel. These demonstrators were confronted with hundreds of counter-protesters,...

Zoo Director Stephanie Chavez said volunteers were split into teams at the Love the Zoo event, "to divide and conquer" the projects planned. "It was something where I even got emotional. Seeing everyone out in the rain, cold and wet, they were still smiling the entire time. It made me so happy and grateful to be a part of a community that loves their zoo so much,"...
