  • Betty defeats the pesky miller moths

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 17, 2023

I have a black coffee maker in my kitchen, which is my first destination every morning. Allow me to clarify. Yes, it makes black coffee, but the coffee maker itself is black, which I mention because the dark color makes it a favored hiding spot of our pesky spring visitors, the miller moths. I don’t need to tell many of you that we’ve been host to a bumper crop of those vile critters this year. Even for a woman like me who keeps her rose-colored glasses on the nightstand so...

On this date ... 1951: It rained. Again. Previously parched eastern New Mexico received rain for the third consecutive day, more than 2.5 inches overall in some areas. “The three days of drought-breaking rain were greatly welcomed by jubilant farmers ... The rainy spell was hailed as a ‘million-dollar rain’ because it came at a time when crops were beginning to suffer and when spring planting was being delayed because of powder-dry soil,” the Clovis News-Journal reported. 1955: Sheridan McIntosh was sentenced to 60 days in th...

  • Faith: Time to lay a longtime friend to rest

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 16, 2023

Sad and glad. At this moment, I am both. Last week I completed the editing and page creation for the final issue of The Christian Appeal devotion magazine. I’ve served as the managing editor for the little monthly magazine for almost 40 years. A very little math is the only kind of math I ever do, but I’m pretty sure that, when I sent the files to the printer for the June issue, it was Issue #472 for me. That’s quite a run, though it’s less than the 60 years this issue m...

the Staff of The News|Updated May 16, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE – Maybe the Melrose Buffaloes were just setting up District 3-1A rival Logan all along. It might have looked that way to the previously unbeaten and top-ranked Longhorns, who came into Saturday's Class 1A state championship baseball game with three district wins over the Buffs by a combined score of 50-7. "They were right where we wanted them," Melrose coach Jared Wilhoit joked. This was a different day, though, and Melrose (12-5), seeded third in the six-team tour...

  • Opinion: Climate activists have too much power

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated May 16, 2023

AOC and her Green New Deal buddies in the Biden government are not just winning their crusade against fossil fuels. They’re also wrecking the country – appliance by appliance. Our washing machines, refrigerators and microwaves have already been made less efficient and more expensive because of new federal standards pushed by fanatical environmentalists who think like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Not long ago, government regulators were caught planning to outlaw gas kitchen sto...

  • Letters to the editor - May 17

Ute Pipeline not a long-term solution I have analyzed the effects that the Ute Lake pipeline would have had on the water available in Ute Lake using the actual historical daily United States Geological Survey data from the year 2007 to 2023. I am a Texas certified public accountant with many, many years of data analysis experience. The ENMWUA proposes to draw 16,415-acre feet through the pipeline each year. Using the 16,415-acre feet a year is equivalent to 44.97-acre feet per day. I simply calculated what each day’s lake rea...

The federal government on March 27 listed the lesser prairie chicken as an endangered species. More than seven weeks later, area farmers and agriculture officials still aren’t sure exactly what that means. “Nobody gives me a square answer on this,” Roosevelt County Ag Agent Patrick Kircher said last week.
