    More than half the city of Portales was without water until noon Monday, after a water main break at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday forced shutdown of parts of the water system. Similar to an incident that occurred in February of 2006, city officials say the emergency response and shutdown for repairs went much smoother than that event.   • Valve upgrades not in place soon enough

    The city of Portales has spent a little over a year working to avoid the water problems caused in February 2006 when a 24-inch water main failed. The upgrades were still a couple months off when another big line burst Sunday. Installing a series of valves that would enable the city to shut down water in a particular area is the goal, according to Public Works Director Tom Howell.     Staff and Wire Reports ALBUQUERQUE — Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a man accused in the killing of an elderly Portales couple whose bodies were found stuffed in the trunk of a burned car. Stanley Bedford, 43, of Portales is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and evidence tampering and one count of possession of stolen property.     Clovis is experiencing one of its wettest years in recorded history — or at least for the first five months. With Sunday night’s deluge, the Clovis area has received 7.31 inches of rain in 2007, which is more than double the historical average through May 20, according to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.   • Reward offered for assault information

    Authorities are looking for information in a case involving an assault last month on a Clovis man, according a press release from the Clovis Police Department. Eric J. Burrell, 39, remains in a Lubbock hospital recovering from injuries suffered in the assault and has been unable to communicate much information to law enforcement, Clovis Capt. Patrick Whitney said. Witnesses saw Burrell get into a white, extended cab pick-up about 1:30 p.m. April 26 in the parking lot of a smoke shop on Main Street, according to police.... Full story

    If there is square dancing in heaven, James Pettus is probably calling one right now. The Portales resident, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2003, and his wife Wanda were the heart and soul of square dancing in eastern New Mexico for three decades, according to local square dancers.
