A nearby farmer’s son confessed to the robbery a few days later and all but $78 was found, most of it buried under a seed bin on his family’s property. 1942: The “suddenly announc...

  • Faith: My job to trust God to build something lasting in me

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 21, 2024

A sinkhole. That’s what I was told our little community of Muleshoe recently acquired on the east side of our town. Full disclosure: I have not seen this new-to-us geological feature with my own eyes. I’ve not even seen pictures yet. I’ve mostly heard second- or third-hand reports that may or may not be accurate, and, though I try not to spread lies and gossip in this column, I warn you that the words I’m stringing together here today are not in the same universe as serious...

  • Lady Cats finish 10th at 5A state

the Staff of The News|Updated May 21, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE – Gabrielle Foggie didn't win the race she'd hoped to win, but she did enough to help Clovis High's girls earn a top-10 finish in Class 5A state track over the weekend. Foggie came up short in her bid to repeat last year's 400 title as a sophomore, but not for lack of effort. In a fast field, she claimed second place in the event in a time of 57.20 seconds, trailing Las Cruces High junior standout Kaselle Davis (55.58). Seven of the eight finalists ran times of u...

PHS finished with 23 ½ points while the Lady Eagles, who were sixth in the relay race, dropped to eighth place with 20 points. No one but no one was...

  • Opinion: Portales city clerk: A legacy of love

    Janet Bresenham, Guest columnist|Updated May 21, 2024

Most people knew Joan Martinez-Terry as the longtime, dedicated, hard-working Portales city clerk. I did, too. But above all else, she became one of my first real friends when I moved to Portales many years ago. When I started as city editor for the Portales News-Tribune in June 1991, she was working across the street at Portales City Hall. I attended every Portales City Council meeting and she did, too. I learned fast that she was the go-to person for any questions about Portales. I saw firsthand her tireless public service...

  • Opinion: Trump only person who can save US from Biden

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated May 21, 2024

What’s happening on CNN and MSNBC is disgusting, but not surprising. Some of their so-called pundits and reporters have been downright giddy while watching Donald Trump on trial in New York City. They think the New York DA’s office is doing God’s work, not Joe Biden’s. They love watching lying lowlifes like porn star Stormy Daniels and Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen testifying against the ex-president. It doesn’t matter to losers like Joe & Mika and Jen Psaki that the De...

  • Opinion: Biden v. Trump debates have right balance

New York Daily News, Syndicated content|Updated May 21, 2024

The last time the Democrats and the Republicans held a White House rematch with the same two contenders was 1956, when Ike beat Adlai Stevenson for the second straight time. Earlier, there were redos with William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan (McKinley won both in 1896 and 1900) and Grover Cleveland vs. Benjamin Harrison (in 1888, Harrison defeated the incumbent Cleveland, who then staged a comeback victory in 1892). In the pre-Civil War days, before the GOP existed, when there were Whigs and such, Martin Van Buren...

  • Opinion: Lack of climate mitigation could seal fate

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated May 21, 2024

If you ask me, history is speeding up. Used to be, things didn’t change much from one generation to another, but with the onset of the 20th century, it all began to accelerate. And, now that we’re a couple of decades into the 21st century, we’re living as if the past doesn’t matter anymore. But of course, it does. History is how we got here, and it portends where we’re going. My baby-boomer generation has been through some incredible history. We were raised during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and ’60s, which led o...

For those that aren’t fans of the heat, Shoemake said he doesn...

  • Maybe he just likes being alone

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated May 21, 2024

We have a black cat that spends a few minutes every day walking through the house, meowing loudly. Why? I don't know, it's a cat thing. "He's probably protesting that he's not an only cat," I said once to The Lady of the House. I thought of our black cat as I considered Pinocchio, the lone donkey who has his own spread of land up at Clovis' Ned Houk Park. Apparently his cantankerousness with other donkeys is how he ended up at Ned Houk Park. I didn't used to know a thing...
