Portales City Council members on Tuesday unanimously approved a property tax increase, but by a smaller amount than originally proposed. Council members voted to hike taxes by 1.47 mills, up from the current 2.796 mills for residential property owners. A mill generates $1 for every $1,000 in taxable value. If property is assessed at $300,000, its taxable value is $100,000 and the property tax would be $100 per mill. The council in February voted tentatively to increase the mill rate by 4.425. On Tuesday, it decided to... Full story

Who put Jesus on the cross? That’s a question one of my favorite Bible professors liked to ask when he wanted to make his students’ brains bleed. And it’s a question with a hook in it. So, what do you think? If you answered, the religious authorities who were in power, you’d be right. The most overtly religious folks of Jesus’ day. Folks who fancied themselves the most “spiritual” of all people killed the Son of God. Now, by the way, if you think I’m leaning toward any kind of...
The 2023 New Mexico legislative session was generally disappointing for New Mexicans who wish to see much-needed K-12 education reform. However, it was not a total loss. In fact, one bill did pass that could help thousands of New Mexico families pay for educational options that work best for them. Without a single “no” vote during the 2023 session, HB 342 will soon be the “law of the land.” The bipartisan bill was sponsored in the House by Republican Minority Leader Ryan Lane...

My unsolicited advice for this year’s graduates is simple: Move slow and fix things. In 2014, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg coined the phrase “move fast and break things” to describe the mentality of our new 20-year-old tech-sector corporate leaders who believed all human knowledge gained over the centuries had been made obsolete by quantum computing. “The idea is that if you never break anything, you’re probably not moving fast enough,” Zuckerberg explained. He expounded on the idea during a college lecture. “A lot of t...

According to the NWS station at Clovis Regional Airport the Clovis area picked up 1/100th of an inch of rain Sunday afternoon at about 1 p.m. Su...

Two events, new to Clovis, are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The Second annual Beautiful Ashes Revival will be at Greene Acres Park in Clovis.
