Zach Gerleve has always been close to earning a berth in the NCAA Division II national outdoor track and field championships. In each of his four years at Eastern New Mexico University, the senior from Truth or Consequences has reached the “provisional” qualifying distance in javelin, meaning he’s thrown far enough to perhaps be invited at the NCAA’s discretion. This time, he got the call — as did junior triple-jumper Kyle Harris. They are the school’s first NCAA qualifiers in the sport, and compete today at Johnson C....

A few days ago, I was waiting for an aerobics class to start when I casually started chatting with a woman standing next to me. Thirty seconds into our superficial conversation, my new friend couldn’t contain her excitement, and told me that in two days she would have some “work” done, and energetically pointed at her bosom. I wasn’t sure what to say, so I stated something obvious, “Oh, yes, gravity does take its toll on our bodies, especially after having children.” She quickly explained she doesn’t have children, and...
With World War II over, the temporary Santa Fe Heights apartments at 14th and Thornton streets had come to an end. The occupants at the Santa Fe Heights started looking for homes they could afford. It wasn’t long until they found a man who had come out of the war in 1946 and had built up Clovis’ largest contracting business for the construction of new homes. That man was Jack M. Stagner. He started business in Clovis as a dealer in building materials, including lumber, sash and doors. It wasn’t long until he figured he could...
Last week, in this column, I wrote about my recent trip back to Western Pennsylvania, and specifically mentioned the day I spent at Lake Erie. This lake is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, and is subject to sudden and dangerous storms. I have actually had the dubious privilege of being out in a small sailboat when such a storm came up — on more than one occasion. What that says about my ability to learn from mistakes, I’d rather not know. The lake also carries winter weather across from its northern (Canadian) shore and...

Anita Doberman Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother, Nonna Dela. She lived so close to my home that I could see her balcony from our windows, and would often yell on top of my lungs, “Nonnaaaa, come outside to see my outfit,” in the early morning hours, before going to school. I looked forward to being with Nonna Dela, and have wonderful memories of her telling me stories about her life as a young girl living in the outskirts of Rome, my mom’s adventures as a teenager, her fascinating parties in th...

Tonya Fennell: Cannon Connections May is a month where change is evident in more ways than one. The weather heats up, the grass turns green and schools release the students for a couple of months of relaxation. And around the Fennell house there has been much change as well. Our oldest child, 17-year-old Josh, has completed his first year of high school, experienced his first minimum wage job in food service and is starting to seriously consider what he wants to do with his future (he does know that it won’t involve food s...

Staff photo: Andy DeLisle The Ford Escape Hybrid gets 34 miles per gallon in city driving. When the vehicle travels under 25 mph, the gas engine turns off and the car is powered by the electric motor. Fed up with rising gas prices, consumers are purchasing hybrid cars, downsizing from trucks and SUVs to smaller vehicles and cars, and, as is the case with Nerissa Custer, seriously considering buying motorcycles. With gas averaging around $3.38 a gallon this week, Custer said, “I’ve been wanting to get a motorcycle for awhile,...
The Fort Sumner police chief said he discovered a break-in of his department’s evidence storage area two weeks ago when he spotted a trail of dried marijuana leaves. Wayne Atchley said dried marijuana plants were stolen May 10 from a batch of about 2,500 plants in the village’s evidence storage area. There were no signs of forced entry to the exterior of the building, indicating the suspect used a key, he said, gaining entry into the storage area by climbing over its wall thr...
Local veterans and residents are set to gather Monday at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens cemetery to honor and remember lives lost in defense of the nation. “I don’t believe the veterans get enough recognition,” retired veteran Rick Robertson said. “Stop to think about it. Every generation starting with the Revolutionary War has had its war right on down the line. My war was Vietnam.” The retired Navy chief petty officer said he believes it is important to teach future generations about the sacrifices made fighting for the Unite...
Jury selection is still on schedule in the death penalty case of a Portales man accused of killing an elderly Portales couple. Stanley Bedford, 43, of Portales is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and evidence tampering, and one count of possession of stolen property. So far, District Attorney Matt Chandler said 150 potential jurors have been questioned individually. Of those, 42 have been placed on a panel. By estimates from Chandler and Gary Mitchell of Ruidoso, who is defending Bedf...
