  • Jose Canseco's head, I salute you

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated May 27, 2018

I know many of us are using this weekend to honor those we lost in Memorial Day. Others are using the time just to enjoy family and friends, and maybe an air show. However you choose to spend your time, spend it well. I plan to do these things, plus mark the silver anniversary of the day Carlos Martinez hit the ball to the deepest part of Cleveland Stadium — Jose Canseco’s head. Yes, 25 years ago on Saturday new Texas Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco made highlight reel history when he lost track of a deep fly ball, only to... Full story

  • until stanley cup is secure, nix the capitals

    rob langrell, publisher|Updated May 27, 2018

in professional sports, expansion teams tend to get beaten up like red-headed stepchildren. remember the likes of the houston texans, tampa bay buccaneers, vancouver grizzlies, toronto raptors? what about the minnesota wild, columbus blue jackets, arizona diamondbacks and tampa bay devil rays? the only thing in common with each of their first few seasons was an abundance of losses. true to form, when an expansion team starts play, their roster is generally full of... Full story

The royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle... The newly crowned Duke and Duchess of Sussex took place May 19 as the world watched in curiosity, while waiting in suspense of the arrivals, the wedding details, and of course, what the guests and bride would be wearing. Well, the wait is over, but the media is still reporting on details of the big day. The bride wore a simple and classic boat neck gown by British designer Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. One of my...

  • Scammers call anyway; have fun with it

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated May 27, 2018

Remember the days when, if the phone rang, we immediately dropped everything and ran to the wall or telephone table and talked to the person on the other end of the line? I’m really pining for those days lately. When this cell phone business started our phone numbers were pretty protected. Sure, by that time telemarketers had become pesky and we had been forced to create the national “Do-not-call” list for our landlines but cellular was pest free. Not anymore. It was alrea...

The Staff of The News|Updated May 27, 2018

On this date ... 1993: Thrift stores, like the one run by the Salvation Army in Clovis, were seeing an upsurge in business thanks to the nationwide “grunge” fashion trend, which included an “oversized worn flannel shirt, torn and faded jeans, a pair of clunky boots, and a bandana knotted over long hair,” according to the Clovis News-Journal. Clovis Salvation Army Capt. David Birks said his store had “a wide selection of grunge-able attire,” including $4 used jeans and $3 used flannel shirts. “We can be an outlet for people in...

  • Reporter's notebook - Snake problem?

    David Grieder|Updated May 27, 2018

If you have a problem snake on your property, Cody Machen's advice is for you to leave it be — and let him deal with it. "People are scared of what they don't understand," he told The News. "90 percent of snake bites are because people are (ignorant)." Machen, the reptile curator at Hillcrest Park Zoo, knows a thing or two about snakes — and he's not afraid of them. Starting in his childhood in Portales and for about 25 years since, he estimates he's caught in excess of 1,0...

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE — The 2018 Cannon Air Force Base Air Show Space and Tech Fest kicked off a weekend of flight, food and fun on Saturday with not much for attendees to complain about, other than the 95-plus degree temperatures. Though much of the action took place high in the sky, one highlight on the ground was the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) pen which featured some of the technological advances the Air Force makes use of like a mannequin that can b... Full story

  • Law is law, but let common sense prevail

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated May 26, 2018

“The law is an ass,” as it is frequently both stupid and stubborn. — Mr. Bumble, “Oliver Twist” One is reminded of this observation by the Charles Dickens character when reading about the official clampdown by the state on the traditional glass of bubbly served up at Ann Matthews Bridal in Albuquerque after the bride-to-be selects her gown. As reported by UpFront columnist Joline Gutierrez Kreuger, bridal shop owner Jason Jones thought the sounds of corks popping and crystal clinking was the perfect way to celebrate...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eastern New Mexico track and field athletes had one last good showing on Saturday, to cap off the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, and made a little history along the way.
