  • Commentary: Bill Walton was gangly giant, kind, quirky soul

Bill Plaschke Los Angeles Times, Syndicated content|Updated May 28, 2024

Fittingly, my favorite Bill Walton encounter involved only his voice. It was in October 2000, the day before John Wooden's 90th birthday. I was visiting with Coach in his modest Encino condo when the phone rang and the answering machine picked up. Suddenly the room was filled with a familiar deep and gravelly singing from across the globe. "Happy birthday to you ... happy birthday to you ... happy birthday from Australia..." Wooden smiled. "Oh, that's Bill Walton," he said....

  • Opinion: Why Pride's important in eastern NM

    Taylor McCoy, Guest columnist|Updated May 28, 2024

Eastern New Mexico Pride, hosted by Eastern New Mexico Rising, will return for its second year to Curry and Roosevelt County. A question I am asked constantly as a gay woman is, "Why do we need Pride?" First, to honor those who fought for our freedom to be who we are at the Stonewall Riots and the first gay pride marches. Pride began June 28, 1969, with the Stonewall Riots, where police tried to raid a gay bar in New York City. This raid quickly got out of hand and erupted...

  • Commentary: Golfer's death reminder of depression's grip

Mac Engel Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Syndicated content|Updated May 28, 2024

FORT WORTH, Texas - Whatever Scottie Scheffler is going through right now with a stupid legal issue is nothing. So some of the new grass as part of the complete course renovations at Colonial Country Club looks bad. Who cares? On Saturday afternoon, when news hit that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray was dead, everything was put in its proper place. So much of what we waste so much time worrying about is just that. A waste. Because there is life. And there is death. On Sunday...

  • Faith: Walking with my little part of the Body of Christ has enlarged my family

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 28, 2024

My wife and I recently celebrated our 39th anniversary, and I’m thankful. Granted, both the original event and this most recent occurrence came almost on top of Easter Sunday (as have several of those occasions). As well it should, Resurrection Sunday pretty well eclipses any other anniversaries. Someone who knows us well, and is even a little proficient with simple arithmetic, might be thinking, “OK, I don’t mean to be a busybody, but aren’t three of your four sons already...

  • Pages past, May 29: Beef packers paying $2.40 to $3.15 per hour

No injuries had been reported. Record rainfall totals across the region were set in 1941 and stand today. Clovis recorded 44...

  • Senior Center opens to mixed reviews

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated May 28, 2024

It's been a little over two weeks since the $8.9 million Hillcrest Senior Center opened its doors. Reviews from its patrons are mixed. Lupe Montoya said she appreciates the city's effort, but she has a few critiques. "I think they spent too much and didn't have to spend as much as they did," Montoya said. She wished the city would've added a private pool for senior citizens. "But it is a nice building and I'm glad the city did their part to look out for us," Montoya said....

  • Opinion: Congress reduced to the worst of reality television

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated May 28, 2024

To state the 118th Congress is an exercise in debasement, dereliction, and dysfunction would be an understatement. But what happened on the House Oversight Committee this month took things to a new low. House Republicans were advocating for holding Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in contempt of Congress — an action the committee chairman, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, gleefully promoted in a fundraising appeal. They would eventually get “to the business at hand” but not be...

  • One of the things I miss about living farther south is the border towns

    Grant McGee|Updated May 28, 2024

A few years back I had a day job at a car dealership in Florida. I was walking back in the mechanics area and walked by a “soccer parent van” that had its back innards taken out. “What’s with this mess?” I asked the mechanic. “We had to rip everything out to replace the rails that allowed the back seat to move back and forth,” he said. “Reminds me of what the Americans do to your car at the border if they think you have something to hide,” I said. “Did that ever happen to you?” asked the mechanic, wiping his hands as h...
