  • Lady Cats turn back Roswell in four

    Eric Butler

ROSWELL — After a year away from volleyball, Clovis senior Aimee Hilburn got her groove back on Thursday. Clovis took a tight 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24 victory on the road over Roswell High as Hilburn pounded 20 kills from her outside hitting position. Hilburn, one of the standouts on Clovis’ Class 5A state basketball championship team, didn’t play volleyball during her junior year. “A... Full story

  • Suspicious package product of complacency

Master Sgt. Richard Waters The recent terror attacks against our British brethren in the war against terrorism are a stark and unfortunate reminder that modern terrorists have the ability and fortitude to strike anywhere, at anytime. Everyone, regardless of whether they are military or civilian, can be a target or a sensor in the war on terror. Have you developed the attitude of “it can’t happen here at Cannon?” Let me discuss one small portion of complacency which can have serious repercussions. We recently exper...

  • Peanut growers get lessons

    Tony Parra

In the midst of concrete and asphalt in the city of Portales there is the essence of nature and eastern New Mexico agriculture — a peanut field. The New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service has a demonstration plot off of the Floyd highway, just east of La Casa de Buena Salud and on Thursday it was one of the stops during the NMSU peanut field day tour. The plot contains green peanut plants of various sizes and appearances because the plants are being grown and treated in different ways. Members of the N...

  • Local groups plan efforts to help hurricane victims

    Freedom Newspapers

The residents of Eastern New Mexico are responding to pleas for help from the south, in the wake of demolished neighborhoods in a horrified New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina hit states along the Gulf Coast earlier this week. Spearheading relief efforts are unlikely team-ups of professionals such as New Mexico sheriffs and dairy farmers. “It’s strange that I am involved in this,” said Curry County Sheriff Roger Hatcher. After northern New Mexico colleague recruited his help, the sheriff is ready to personally deliver two tr...

  • Gas spike not changing driving habits

    Freedom Newspapers

In the wake of the recent level-4 hurricane that wrecked local offshore gasoline production and refining operations, concerns about supply shortage and protests against soaring prices are increasing, even as local officials assure the public that everything is under control. Even with gas prices creeping to an-unheard-of $3 per gallon, many local drivers are unwilling to give up their vehicles. “What else can I do?” said Jason Saiz, 22, who works at the municipal golf course and drives a truck. “I’ve been trying to limit how...

  • Zias making changes coming in to home opener

    Freedom Newspapers

Since Mike Maguire became the head coach in 1987, Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team has occasionally struggled against NAIA foe Wayland Baptist. Never, though, have the Zias actually lost to Wayland — until Tuesday’s stunning four-game setback in the season opener at Plainview, Texas. On Wednesday, Maguire canceled the team’s practice and instead scheduled a film-watching session. “I don’t think we got complacent,” he said. “I think maybe we got a little bit lucky (to win the first game before losing the next...

  • Rams, Wildcats concerned with improving

    Kevin Wilson

Anybody who saw Portales’ 36-6 win over West Las Vegas on Friday knows that Tularosa is more than likely to key on Ram junior Eric Segovia. It’s not a fact that’s lost on junior running back Cruz Ontiveros, who may see a big role in his first action of the season. With the Wildcats hopeful to stop another performance like Segovia’s five-touchdown, 201-yard effort, there may be a lot more opportunities for Ontiveros and other Rams. “They’re probably going to stack up the line against Eric,” said Ontiveros, who missed the se...

    Helena Rodriguez

Once in awhile, OK more like often, I get on a soap box and take note of things that really annoy me. Then I see a pattern emerging and presto ... I A) Realize I have better things to do and move on or B) Ignore my conscience and write a column. This week’s column is brought to you by months of in-depth observations and extensive research that I have conducted on our postmodern human condition and the technological advances that have enriched our quality of life. Yeah right. This is a laundry list of complaints from a m... Full story

  • Leave your faith as inheritance

    Joan Clayton

My ancestors left me with a legacy more precious than gold…a strong faith in God. From my great grandparents to my parents I have come to know the purpose of life…”Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). I still see my grandfather with his Bible on his knees. My grandmother’s singing echoes in my ear. I well remember the day she faced serious surgery. “I give it all to you God and if I die I can’t help it.” To me, her... Full story
