The list of what we know as “The Seven Deadly Sins” dates back to the fourth century and, of course, has its basis in the teaching of the Bible. One of the seven was sloth. A one-word paraphrase is inadequate but useful: laziness. We’ve all known some folks beset by such, people who begrudge the effort it takes to breathe, much less to do anything resembling work. Like all sins, this one carries with it a sad list of its own punishments, consequences that hurt not just the s...
Worry is a crippling phenomenon. I know I tend to worry over life in general and I think I am not alone. Those areas of worries that consume people are health, finances, family and jobs. In this life we do have many trials and there are plenty of areas for worry. I read last week an excerpt from the book The Essence of Success by Earl Nightingale. He made a good point about the subject of worry when he wrote: “According to the Bureau of Standards, ‘A dense fog covering sev...
There’s a tool for every job and there are a lot of tools that will do the trick with a little bit of determination and ingenuity. The list is long of things that will do instead of a hammer. The list is short of things that can’t be done with tie-wire, duct tape, nylon ties, and a large adjustable wrench. And just for your information, the latter set of supplies can make many hammer-like solutions. A person’s tools are more important and personal than they might at first appe...

Police Officers Kevin Clements and Leroy Bryant pulled the mower from the lake using a cable attached to a four-wheel drive vehicle. The Clovis News-Journal reported the mower was "brand new." The keys to the mower were in the pocket of a city employee when the incident occurred, the paper reported. 1977: A Tulsa, Oklahoma, man had been...
PORTALES — Children may have been the target audience of a mobile dairy classroom Thursday, but they weren't the only ones who came away with new knowledge. The class was held Thursday morning at Portales City Park as the kickoff event of the Portales Library's summer program Cody Lightfoot, the instructor for New Mexico and Southwest Texas, taught the crowd of children and parents about the nutritional importance of milk and how it's extracted with the help of Peach the d...
PORTALES — A Portales man once accused of multiple child molestations has reached a plea agreement and will serve just two years of supervised probation on lesser charges. Marco Nunez, 39, on Wednesday entered an Alford plea — admitting only there was evidence he could be found guilty — to two counts of attempted contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor. "I would say the end results were justified because of the facts and surrounding allegations," said Nunez...

He is charged with two counts of criminal sexual penetration, a second-degree felony, along with the felony charges of aggravated burglary and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer and a m...
CLOVIS — Five individuals were charged last month in connection with an alleged conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the Curry County jail. Sheriff investigators commenced a drug trafficking investigation on May 15, after inmate Holley Quintana, 35, attempted to recruit a detention officer to pick up a package outside the jail from Ruby Rodriguez, 35, and smuggle it into the center’s female holding annex, according to court documents. Deputy Sheriff and Chief Criminal Investigator Sandy Loomis then began listening to com...

CLOVIS — It is fiesta time in Clovis this weekend. Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and its mission church, San Jose in Texico, have scheduled their annual Fiesta celebration from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday. The fiesta is an opportunity for the parish and its visitors to spend time together in community and to learn about the church, said Rev. Fernando Saenz. “It is nice to see people work for the Lord with the same mission,” he said. The main goal is not to fundraise, said Saenz, but for paris...
