  • Lee a winner for North, South

    Eric Butler

ALBUQUERQUE — Is Floyd’s Brad Lee a southerner or a northerner? Over the weekend, he was both — and a winner every time. Lee was on the North squad at the six-man football North-South all-star game in Ruidoso on Friday night. The North won that clash as Lee saw action at defensive end, tight end and linebacker. Later that same night, Lee reported for duty at the South hotel for the Class 1A-2A baseball series in Albuquerque. Once again, the recent Broncos standout was on the winning side as the South swept the North 8-1 a... Full story

  • Battle of the sexes rather lopsided

    Bob Huber

Here at the Institute for Intellectual Stuff (our motto is, “We Research Thorny Problems Such as Poverty and Baldness”), we’ve recently spent time delving into another timeless issue: Are men and women really different? Of course they are, dummy. Anyone can see that. Proof can be found in arguments between the sexes. Women always win. There’s no middle ground, no compromise, no armistice. If the battle’s ever in doubt, they starch your shorts. Men, on the other hand, gain a temporary upper hand only if they’ve done someth...

  • Snake stories hard to pass up

    Freedom Newspapers

Now that hot weather is blasting the High Plains — as if hot weather isn’t usually blasting the Plains — it’s high time for one of the coolest creatures to come lurking from its hole. Welcome the season of the rattlesnake. Perhaps the most regrettable aspect of my leaving New Mexico is that I never got to see one up close and personal. Perhaps the only reason I am still alive is that I never got to see one up close and personal. Heck, I didn’t even get to hear its infamous rattle. Sure, I know what they look like, thanks to...

  • No empty nest syndrome here

Our children are nearly ready to leave the nest. It seems just like yesterday they were little eggs. OK, I don’t mean children literally. I’m referring our adopted family of swallows. If you’re a regular reader you may remember me telling about the swallows that began building a nest on our front porch earlier in the summer. We left it alone and now we can see two baby swallows peering over the top of the nest with beady little black eyes. The parent swallows built a neat little mud nest, one little beak-sized pellet at a...

  • Youth summer track program hitting its stride in Portales

    PNT Staff

As she stood demonstrating to seven or eight pairs of watchful eyes on how to throw a shot put at the Portales High School track, 14-year-old Samantha Ochoa encouraged the girls to do a couple warm up throws so they could get the hang of it. “It’s okay just calm down, don’t rush and try your hardest,” said Ochoa to 10-year-old Bethany Cota. Cota, a newcomer to track and field events, watched on and then took her turn. She lifted her arm, threw the ball and laughed as she watched it fly through the air. “I’ve never done...
