  • Sunday reader: Cannon PFAS destroyed longtime Clovis farmer's dairy

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 4, 2022

Art Schaap remembers the day in 2018 when people from Cannon Air Force Base knocked on his front door and asked to test his water. The Clovis dairy farmer had seen airmen use firefighting foam during training exercises. But he soon learned that toxic chemicals from that foam had leaked off-base into the groundwater beneath his land. "That's when the nightmare began," he said. In the years since, Schaap found himself unable to sell the cows' contaminated milk or meat. He has...

  • Pages past, June 5: Newspaper promotes freedom

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 4, 2022

On this date ... 1962: The Clovis News-Journal published its opinion-page philosophies: “We believe that all men are equally endowed by their Creator, and not by any government, with the gift of freedom, and that it is every man’s duty to God to preserve his own liberty and respect the liberty of others. Freedom is self-control, no more, no less. “To discharge this responsibility, free men, to the best of their ability, must understand and apply to daily living the great moral guides expressed in the Ten Commandments, the G...

  • I've been geeking out a little over local history

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jun 4, 2022

I’m a bit of a history geek and the more local the history the better. I’ve been geeking out recently and as I write this column tonight on a little gift from my editor. He had asked me recently if I wanted any of the old newspapers in the old Portales News-Tribune morgue. The building was being sold and the contents that had been painstakingly saved for years and maintained carefully (at times by yours truly) were going to have to be moved to his office in Clovis. Thi...

  • Cannabis sales drop off slightly

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 4, 2022

Customers had more than five on it, as the state said cannabis businesses realized about $21.1 million in recreational sales in the month of May. Medical cannabis sales did $17.4 million — combining for a total sales month of about $38.5 million, according to data released by the state’s Cannabis Control Division on Thursday. The sales number for both recreational cannabis and medical cannabis were slightly lower than in April, when adult-use sales began and when the state realized nearly $40 million between the two. In Apr...

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 4, 2022

Like colleges and universities all over the nation, Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University have been facing declining enrollments. Between Fall 2014 and Fall 2021, CCC saw full-time equivalent student enrollment drop by nearly 37%, from 3,744 students to 2,362 in 2021, a chart on the New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED) website shows. The largest drop occurred between 2019 and 2020, the year in which the COVID-19 pandemic peaked, when CCC’s student enrollment dropped by 763 students. CCC’s stu...

The Axtell and Lydia homes had major damage from fires. With the commission vote the property owners of the cited real estate have 15...

  • Opinion: Promising reduced immigration will help at polls

    Joe Guzzardi, Guest columnist|Updated Jun 4, 2022

As Democrats’ prospects in the 2022 mid-term elections dim, the party needs to revive itself with what was once a reliable constituency – Hispanic voters. A Wall Street Journal poll taken in December found Hispanic voters split 37 percent to 37 percent “if the election were held today.” The Journal poll also showed that Hispanic voters mirror the overall voter pool. When asked how Biden is handling his responsibilities, 42 percent approved of the president’s job performance, and 54 percent disapproved – in line with the 41 pe...

  • Draggin' Main, music festival coming up soon

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 4, 2022

Clovis’ Draggin’ Main is an “all things related to cars” event, and it starts a week from today. Draggin’ Main’s co-founder and organizer Gene Porter had that description of what he went on to label as a “non-discriminatory motor event: Cars, bikes, trucks, tractors, cheap, expensive, unfinished, finished, vintage, classic, new, old.” Porter organized the original Draggin’ Main with Bryan Boone nine years ago. The event gets underway with Draggin’ Main’s “Tour of Classic Restaurants” Sunday, June 12 at the Rib Crib restauran...

  • Opinion: Hopefully pro-abortion group can resolve inconsistencies in souls

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 4, 2022

I’ve been in favor of the death penalty since I first knew what it was. I suppose it has something to do with my sense of justice: if you take a life, which is really the only time the death penalty is imposed, you owe a life. That also conflicts somewhat with my Catholic upbringing that teaches all life is precious, but humans have our convenient blind spots, and mine was capital punishment. For most of my life, I’ve been fairly steadfast in my belief that killers des...

  • Opinion: 'Good guys with guns' failed in Uvalde

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 4, 2022

So much for the good guy with a gun. That, you will recall, was Wayne LaPierre’s preferred solution to America’s epidemic of firearms violence. “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun,” he said, “is a good guy with a gun.” The chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association said this on Dec. 21, 2012 -- one week after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left dead six adults and 20 children ages 6 and 7. Americans were grieving and demanding a...

  • Opinion: Biden making consequential missteps

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 4, 2022

The president of the United States is a blowhard -- again. If the country thought it was getting a buttoned-up, by-the-books communicator after four wildly undisciplined years of Donald Trump, it knew nothing about Joseph R. Biden’s long career as Washington’s standout long-winded, seat-of-the-pants, poorly informed, and misleading talker. Biden blew up two presidential campaigns with his verbal idiocy, and no one thought during his decades as a senator that he was just the...

  • Opinion: Media has responsibility to accuracy

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Jun 4, 2022

The news media have the responsibility to present current events as accurately as they can, using reliable sources and verifying these sources. Failure to present an accurate account or a skewed account of events is not only unethical, it is dangerous. People at all levels including political and military leaders regularly use data from media to determine actions that can have dire effects on their lives. An “unnamed source who was not authorized to comment,” is not a rel...

  • Opinion: Tuesday good day to cast votes for small government

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 4, 2022

Tuesday is Election Day throughout New Mexico. Decisions we make today will impact public policy for the next two to four years. Our newspaper for nearly a century has used this space to champion smaller government. Today seems a good day to make that argument again. Most of our local candidates are running under the umbrella of the Republican Party. Most Republicans claim to support smaller government. Unfortunately, not all of their stated polices reflect the concept. It’s been interesting to hear local Republicans argue a...

PORTALES -- A Portales woman is due in court Wednesday to face charges of child abuse, neglect, and animal cruelty in a case that District Attorney Brian Stover terms “extreme.” Sharman Eminger, 53, faces a third-degree felony charge of abuse of a child, a misdemeanor charge of abandonment of a child, and nine charges of cruelty to animals. After the May 24 shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed, school officials nationwide have been reviewing their own campus security. School administrators in Clovis and Portales have been looking at their campuses too. Crowder is not seeking re-election. A recently realigned District 64 includes Clovis and Portales. Former area District Attorney Andrea Reeb is unchallenged for the Republican slot on the ballot in Tuesday’s voting “I’m running for the state representative district 64 seat,” Lansford said. “I’m not running against Reeb.” “Tha...
