MELROSE — A Tijeras man was killed Tuesday morning in an accident involving three tractor trailers just west of Melrose. Richard Joseph, 45, was declared dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred just before 5:30 a.m. according to information from the New Mexico State Police. The NMSP investigation indicated a 2000 Kenworth tractor trailer driven by Joseph was traveling east on U.S. 60 near mile marker 357, and for unknown reasons crossed the centerline into the westbound lane. PORTALES — Regents approved a 4% cost-of-living raise this month for Portales’ Eastern New Mexico University President and Chancellor Jeff Elwell, in keeping with identical percentage compensation increases for all university employees. In their June 1 board meeting ENMU regents voted 4-1 to raise Elwell’s annual salary from $245,000 to $254,800, with student regent Joseph Gergel voting against. On this date ... 1969: An estimated 15,000 to 25,000 people had attended an open house at Cannon Air Force Base. While many were there for the static displays of F-111 fighter jets and other aircraft used by the 832nd Air Division, the Thunderbirds and Golden Knights were the main attractions.
