“Courage is almost a contradiction in terms,” writes G. K. Chesterton. “It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” Yes, and we wonder, don’t we? We always wonder how much courage we really have, for how can we know until we’re tested? I still have my draft card. I remember when I was still in high school, Amarillo’s Tascosa High, being required to make the short trip over to an office in the even-then historic Herring Hotel (established...

They scored 27 runs in a three-inning stretch spanning both games en route to a 20-1, 14-1 sweep of Pecos in a District 6-2A doubleheader. Senior Seth Griego went a combined 5-for-7 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. Included were a pair of triples in Game 1. Texico (10-1, 5-0 district) broke the opener wide open with nine runs in the third and six more in the fourth, then wasted no time taking contro...
I counted recently and discovered that my shelves are creaking with more than 80 yearbooks from various schools. The oldest is from 1940, the most recent is from 2016. They're mostly from this immediate geographic area: Eastern New Mexico College (and later University), Dora, Floyd, and Portales. While I can say with complete certainty that selling yearbook ads tops the list of activities I am grateful I never had to participate in again after graduation, I find those ads...
CARLSBAD — No one was going to beat Hobbs in Monday’s District 4-5A boys golf tournament at Riverside Country Club. The battle was for second place and the district’s other representative to the upcoming Class 5A state meet. Roswell High rode an impressive 5-under-par 66 from Peyton Jones to second place at 332, 30 shots behind the heavily favored Eagles. Meantime, Carlsbad was third at 351 and Clovis High fourth at 370. “He’s the best player in the district, by far, and has been for the past couple of years,” CHS boys co...
“My very first job I said thank you and please, they made me scrub a parking lot down on my knees, and then I got fired for being scared of bees, and they only give me fifty cents an hour.” Those John Prine lyrics, from his song “Fish and Whistle,” are a throwback to the workaday world a bunch of us old-timers grew up in. Work was hard and hazardous to your health — and, hey, my first hourly wage was 50 cents an hour too! Times are changing and so is the workplace. Thanks in part to the pandemic, we now realize a lot of wh...
Many times over the years people have demanded proof that liberty is better than the alternative. Sometimes the detail being questioned changes — maybe it’s the concept of human rights or ethics they are objecting to — but the argument is the same. They don’t accept the superiority of liberty over whatever they’d prefer, so they demand proof. No matter what I say, with each response, they move the goal post. With each objection, I’ll be asked to prove something different....
Businesses are scrambling to fill job vacancies as the country continues to reopen from the coronavirus pandemic, but the reality is there simply are not enough people looking for work. The state of Pennsylvania made the right move to pull back on the relaxed standards for unemployment benefits and to reinstate the requirement that those collecting benefits must be actively looking for work. When the pandemic began more than a year ago, Pennsylvania and many other states relaxed rules related to unemployment compensation. In...
On this date … 1966: Local Future Farmers of America members returned from the state FFA convention in Albuquerque, where Pat Woods of Grady received the Sunshine State Farmer Award, “the highest annual honor bestowed by the state group,” according to the Clovis News-Journal. Woods, a third-year member of the Grady FFA, was farming 100 acres of wheat and 73 acres of grain sorghum, and owned 90 feeder steers. Jerry Wood of Dora received a Foundation Award at the conve...
When Nicole Hahn, principal at Cameo Elementary, invited me to drop by before the end of the school year, I figured it was one of the end-of-year activities. When students had returned to school in person, there were still certain events canceled and/or modified to remain in compliance with health restrictions. One canceled event was “Field Day,” a fun outdoors event of physical games and competitions. Unable to hold the traditional Field Day, the ever-resourceful pri...

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled Monday the state has no constitutional or statutory requirement to compensate businesses for financial losses and expenses related to public health orders issued during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 5-0 ruling dealt with nearly two dozen lawsuits filed in district courts across the state last year, seeking compensation from the state from its public health orders that closed businesses or limited in-person services. The plaintiffs argued the orders constituted a taking of private p...
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Judiciary announced Monday it had crossed the 70% mark for full vaccination of its judges and employees against the COVID-19 virus, and more than 75% have received at least one vaccination. “A highly vaccinated workforce in our courts reinforces the Judiciary's commitment to protecting the health and safety of all New Mexicans,” said New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael E. Vigil. “The Judiciary was able to keep courthouses open throughout the pandemic and preserve access to justice service...
For many, finding the time and motivation to exercise regularly is a challenge. For first responders, however, physical fitness can be a matter of life and death. That's why the Clovis Fire Department has been investing in its own gym and some staffers have become certified personal trainers. The gym at Fire Station 6, located at 21st and Main, began with just a cheap treadmill or maybe a stationary bike, said Lt. Jose Gutierrez, and a few firefighters would bring in their...
PORTALES — Recent rains have caused plenty of inconveniences lately, including the postponement of one high school graduation and countless flood claims by private citizens, businesses and government entities alike. But there are several obvious benefits to the recent moisture, with optimism a notable one at Tuesday’s Roosevelt County Commission meeting. Based on the advice of Portales Fire Chief T.J. Cathey and others, commissioners voted 3-1 to lift the county’s prior declaration of exceptional drought status and associated...
