  • North All-Stars prevail

    Eric Butler

Make it three-in-a-row for the North in your scoresheets for the annual North/South All-Star Softball Series. Behind the pitching of St. Pius’ Karisa Medrano and Sandia’s Maddie Machac, the North swept the South in a Friday night doubleheader in Clovis. The final meeting of the third-game series is at 10 a.m. today. “I hope we sweep them though,” Machac said. “That would be cool.” First game North 5, South 1 The South had its only lead of the night when Carlsbad’s Katie Jo Castaneda reached Medrano for a double in the first i... Full story

  • Portales Little League applauds pitch limits

    PNT Staff

New guidelines for little league baseball pitchers is changing the way coaches and players approach the game and according to many — is saving little arms for high school, college and beyond. Roosevelt and Curry County have played the 2007 season under Little League International’s new pitch count program which prescribes actual pitch limits on each pitcher rather than the traditional method of limiting the number of innings pitched and many area Little League coaches welcome the changes. “It preserves the young kids...

  • North all-stars complete sweep

CLOVIS — In her last game at Lady Wildcat Complex, Clovis High’s Jordan Garrett went out with a bang. Unfortunately for her South squad, Garrett made about the only noise for her team on Saturday in the finale of a three-game New Mexico High School Coaches Association all-star series. Garrett came off the bench in the fifth inning, led off the sixth with a triple up the left-center field alley and then raced home on a short sacrifice fly to center by Cobre’s Alyssa Vargas. That was the South’s only run in a 9-1 loss as the...

  • Hounds hope recruits can bolster defense

    CNJ staff

PORTALES — Shawn Scanlan is hoping his Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team can get back to its defensive roots next season. Scanlan said the Greyhounds won back-to-back Lone Star Conference South Division titles in 2003 and 2004 primarily because of defense. That element has been lacking since then, he said, and as a result the team has gone just 14-22 in division play. The Hounds have added six junior college transfers for next season, to go with four returning players. Scanlan is hoping to sign two more play...

Under legislation cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., attorneys would be required to commit to three years employment as state, local or federal prosecutors or public defenders to be eligible for the loan repayments, according to a press release from Domenici’s office. They would be eligible for a maximum of $60,000, the release said. “It...

The parade traveled down Second Street from Eastern New Mexico University to City Park, where festivities were already underway. “It was kinda neat. We enjoyed it,” Irene McFarland said of the parade. • Lasting marriage takes work

Twenty-five years ago today, my wife and I were just finishing up our honeymoon in Colorado and ready to start our life together. Some days it seems like we've just barely gotten started on that life and all the plans; other days I'm so comfortable with my life that it seems like I've always been with my wife. To be sure, there were some rocky times — right from the start — that threatened our marriage but we've bucked the trend and stayed together. We're both happy about that today and proud of each other. I seem to be the...

  • Panic attacks, anxiety not uncommon

I get panic attacks. They’re not frequent, and I’ll go years without one. But inevitably and without warning, they show up like an uninvited guest. I say without warning, but they’re not entirely random. While my husband is trying to assure me I’m not having a heart attack, he’ll gently ask me what’s happening in my life. Sure enough, it’s not coincidence the panic has returned just when things are at their most stressful, even if not at that particularly moment. So it was a few days ago while I was sitting under the hea... Full story

  • Imprisonment without charges unconstitutional

Editorial A ruling Monday that President Bush does not have the constitutional authority to detain a legal U.S. resident indefinitely without charges in a Navy brig in South Carolina was narrowly crafted to the facts of the case and studiously avoided discussing prisoners held in similar circumstances at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. But the ruling could do a great deal to undermine some of the extravagant claims made for the president's powers in wartime – even a time when Congress has not declared war as the Constitution requires... Full story
