  • Homicide victim 'had a huge heart'

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 19, 2022

PORTALES -- Autumn Duran remembers James Roper as a free-spirit, wandering the streets of Portales, making people laugh. She called him "the statue." "We saw him around a lot," she said. "He would stand at Allsup's and not really move, just move his eyes. And then he'd start to winking and smiling. He'd ask for change or whatever, but I think that was just a way for him to get to know people." She also remembered him standing in the street. "He'd throw his hat on the ground,...

    Updated Jun 18, 2022

We asked readers on Facebook “What’s your favorite kind of ice cream? And tell us the story behind your choice.” A few responses: • Coty Wheeler: Mint chocolate chip. My daughter likes it and she makes the rules. • Mikayla Mountjoy: Thin mint or lemon cookie from Tumbleweed Ice Cream. He makes the ice cream from scratch and you can taste the difference. It is so incredibly good. My boyfriend absolutely adores the hot chocolate ice cream from Sweetwaters at Landalls for the same reason. • Shelley Lewis Winn: Black walnut, whe...

Any way you measure it, eastern New Mexico is a long day's drive away from the nearest beach. But that hasn't stopped Clovis-Carver Public Library and the Portales Public Library from diving into "Oceans of Possibilities," the shared theme for the 2022 summer reading programs that kicked off early this month, and continue through the end of July. Both libraries have packed their summer calendars with activities and events that appeal to a wide range of ages, from storytimes...

  • Worried about the climate in my personal habitat

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jun 18, 2022

I’m currently undergoing climate change inside my home. I’m worried. My garage is heating up like nobody’s business. It’s pretty easy to sweat completely through a shirt just getting loaded up in the car. The car displays the outside temperature in the garage as 91 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s pretty warm. But as high as that temperature is there is an advancing ice age in my freezer. When that sucker started frosting up it really got with it. I thought it would take humid con...

  • Portales school officials note improvement since pandemic

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 18, 2022

In the first school year following COVID-19 restrictions like remote learning, Portales Municipal Schools students are regaining academic ground lost to pandemic restrictions at a pace that is about even with students in the rest of the state, Sara Hunton, the Portales schools’ coordinator of curriculum and instruction, on Tuesday told the district’s school board. In all grade levels for which she analyzed data, Hunton said, the gap between top-performing students and bottom-performing students shrunk in the 2022-23 school ye...

Officials at both school districts said the CEP is one option among others that...

  • Opinion: There's no shame in accepting help

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 18, 2022

I understand criticism of the Biden administration for not acting sooner to address the baby formula shortage before it became a crisis. That’s justified. What I don’t understand is the criticism he’s received for fixing the problem. Political commentators from both parties have claimed it is “shameful” to be receiving assistance from other countries. No, it isn’t. It’s wonderful, and it’s bringing immediate relief to desperate mothers throughout the nation. The only reason to think it would be shameful is pride, which is a q...

  • Opinion: Election lie is, always was, a con

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 18, 2022

“Everybody plays the fool.” — The Main Ingredient, 1972 I won’t bother reasoning with you. As I’ve said before in this space, it’s my opinion that you folks who support Donald Trump are, by definition, incapable of that function, so it’s foolish to even try. You may think that’s harsh. I think it’s time-saving. But I do have a question for you: Don’t you feel kind of stupid right now? Doesn’t the revelation that it was all a con leave you feeling like a sucker? Doesn’t simpl...

  • Opinion: Gun control should be left in states' hands

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 18, 2022

Matthew McConaughey was the star of the latest gun drama in Washington. Two weeks after the slaughter of 19 school children in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas, the actor made an emotional appeal for stronger gun control measures. McConaughey got – and deserved — praise for much of what he said in the White House briefing room on Tuesday. Sure, he was a celebrity prop being exploited by President Biden and House Democrats to sell their hysterical and unconstitutional gun con...

  • Opinion: Harris disaster as vice president

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 18, 2022

The media taboo against talking about Joe Biden’s age and the obstacle it presents to his running again in 2024 is finally off. Which should put a lantern on another looming problem for the Democrats -- waiting in the wings is a deeply unpopular officeholder, who makes Biden look like a prospective electoral juggernaut by comparison. Democrats can be forgiven for considering the possibility of only Kamala Harris standing between them and a return of Donald Trump and telling t...

  • Opinion: Could monkeypox be next pandemic?

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Jun 18, 2022

I’ve been seeing more and more articles about monkeypox in the last several months. Just last week, an AP article headlined “UK reports 104 new cases of monkeypox” informed me that the 104 cases of the disease were “what had become the biggest outbreak beyond Africa of the normally rare disease.” According to the United Kingdom’s Health Security Agency, there are now “470 cases of monkeypox across the country.” Further reading of the article informed me that the “vast major...

  • Opinion: Time to increase transparency of police forces

    Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 18, 2022

One really disturbing crime is sometimes all it takes to enact change at any level. The Uvalde, Texas, shooting has done that, encouraging new federal gun legislation and school safety provisions. It has also revealed the limitations police hope to place on public release of body camera footage. The Texas Department of Public Safety has asked Attorney General Ken Paxton to prevent the public release of footage from cameras that law enforcement officers wore during the shooting at Robb Elementary School, citing one of the...

  • Some offices to close to recognize Juneteenth holiday

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 18, 2022

There will be some closures Monday to remember Juneteenth. The day is remembered for June 19, 1865 when slaves in Texas got the word they were free, about two years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Roosevelt County offices will be closed Monday. In Portales, City Manager Sarah Austin said the city will not close for this Juneteenth, which for government offices would be June 20 but in all likelihood will close for the holiday next year. She blamed oversight for failing to note the holiday this year. The N...
