During one of Billy Graham’s meetings in England many years ago, his wife Ruth Graham had joined him. On that particular day, the local dignitaries had arranged for a luncheon and many of the leading citizens of the area were invited. Ruth Graham ended up sitting across the table from an official at Scotland Yard. While talking to him, Mrs. Graham found that he was in charge of investigating counterfeit money that passed through a wide area of London. He was considered an e...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico stayed in-state to fill its women’s soccer coaching position, hiring Joshua Smith from University of the Southwest. CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission overwhelmingly voted to introduce an ordinance strengthening its leash laws on public property. However, enough happened at Thursday's meeting to suggest final approval could be a dogfight. The commission, by a 6-1 vote, agreed to introduce an ordinance requiring dogs off of an owner's property have a leash no longer than six feet and be under an owner's physical control. Final approval could be considered as soon as the commission's s... Full story

CLOVIS — What started small has turned into a colossus. The 35th annual Plateau Custom Classic softball tournament begins tonight with 96 teams registered, a huge turnout even though it’s actually down from last year’s 109. But still flirting around the 100 mark is way more than anyone expected when the tournament began in the early 1980s. Roger Jackson remembers those days. “We were doing it to kind of have a fundraiser for the team,” Jackson recalled. “My memory doesn’t go t... Full story
On this date ... 1973: A state senator representing eastern New Mexico was urging Congress to focus on safer roads beyond major highways. "It is senseless to build a ribbon of super highways and then allow to exist, just 10 miles away, narrow and deteriorated roads with ridiculously narrow bridges," Odis Echols wrote in telegrams to New Mexico's congressional delegation. Echols, a Democrat, urged federal lawmakers to "trim fat from other legislation to ensure that we obtain...

I’ve been enjoying reading a fine book by Alan Jacobs, a professor in the honors program at Baylor University. When I tell you the title of the book, you’ll likely smile and tell me that, obviously, I read it none too soon. It’s titled “How to Think.” If you just peruse our social landscape very briefly, you’ll certainly recognize the need for better thinking. Often any attempt at cogent thought at all in the midst of our culture’s loud battles would be welcome. In a day when...
