  • Portales Woman's Club looking for help

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jun 26, 2019

One of eastern New Mexico's oldest community service organizations is facing a daunting challenge, according to its president, and is inviting all of us to help brainstorm a solution. The Portales Woman's Club was organized in 1903, six years before Portales was officially incorporated as a city. Since 1932, it has met in the distinctive beige and turquoise New Mexico territorial-style building at 309 W. First St. that is emblazoned with the group's name. "We've served the...

  • Waggoner departing as ENMU athletic director

    Peter Stein|Updated Jun 25, 2019

PORTALES — Greg Waggoner is moving on. Waggoner on Monday officially resigned as Eastern New Mexico University athletic director, submitting his letter of resignation to university president Jeff Elwell, though Elwell stated on Tuesday afternoon that there were face-to-face discussions leading up to it. Elwell answered simply, “no,” to the question of whether Waggoner was asked to resign, before adding, “we met regularly for the two years that I’ve been here and like any people working together, we didn’t always agree on th...

  • Draggin' Main memories

    Updated Jun 25, 2019

We asked readers to look back and tell us their favorite “dragging Main” memories. Some samples: • Making the loop from Der to the Santa Fe building, sometimes out to the Thunderbird ... four lanes of fun on Main Street. The Chinese fire drills, cruising for a week on a buck or less ... Janice Glover’s VW bus ... hanging out in the parking of the old Sears parking lot, talking, listening to music, a brew or more. (Mom and Dad have passed so I’m safe now.) We took occasional trips to Sugar Beet Road to see whose car was best....

The 100th anniversary parade for the American Legion begins at 10 a.m. to start the day. The parade triple feature continues in the afternoon, with a patriotic parade at 4...

  • Republicans seek race they can win

    Tom McDonald|Updated Jun 25, 2019

Just when you think the Trumpettes have been banished from the Land of Enchantment come candidates who are already tugging on the president’s coattails, hoping to find redemption down south for the state’s beleaguered Republican Party. After the shellacking the GOP took in New Mexico last year — Democrats won every statewide and congressional race on the ballot, and took or held on to 72 of 112 seats in the state Legislature — Republicans are in search of a race they can win. Their greatest hope lies in the 2nd Congres...

  • Illegitimate laws poison society

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jun 25, 2019

One way you can tell laws are not legitimate, ethically or morally, is in the way they vary from place to place. Those of us who live near an arbitrary political line — a state line or a national border — have the opportunity to notice this more easily than others might. Something that is legal on one side of the line becomes illegal once you cross it. Without otherwise changing your behavior in the slightest you can go from law-abiding to criminal, by law, simply by pac...

  • Proud of Texas volunteers who fight trafficking

    Updated Jun 25, 2019

For some pastors, caring for the flock can mean taping and floating drywall in Juarez. Churches across Texas regularly help people rescued from human trafficking, often lending their own time and sweat to keep one of Mexico’s few shelters for trafficking victims running. We see love gleam through their quiet, unpaid efforts, love that these victims desperately need. A few times a year, Pastor Doug Roberts leads a team of volunteers from Calvary Temple Church in San Antonio across the border to renovate and improve the v...

  • PRMC administrator re-retiring

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 25, 2019

CLOVIS — There were changes aplenty in technology and the law when it came to the medical industry during the 15 years between Dick Smith’s runs as the Plains Regional Medical Center administrator. But he said the job never changed. “It’s all about taking care of patients and taking care of your community,” Smith said Monday. “You have to have a passion for patient care and service, and be able to look at the community and how you can help it. If you don’t lose that passion, you’re good.” Smith still had the passion, but...

  • Q&A: New Clovis Christian superintendent talks about path forward

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 25, 2019

CLOVIS - Jim Haley knows he's got big shoes to fill, as he succeeds Ladona Clayton to become the new superintendent at Clovis Christian Schools. He's hoping he can do that, and hoping to fill up the enrollment a little with the team Clayton has left for him. Haley, an Abilene native, comes to Clovis from Pecos, Texas, where he was superintendent at the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah Independent School District since January 2016. He's been with CCS for about four weeks, and was able to s...

  • Still working

    Peter Stein|Updated Jun 25, 2019

There they were, Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley, in what was to become an instant Saturday Night Live classic. According to the sketch's premise, they were competing for a spot in the famous Chippendale's dance troupe. And as each danced his heart out, Loverboy's song "Working for the Weekend" blared, a tune more than high-energy enough for dancing competitors to strut their stuff with abandon. The skit debuted live in October 1990 when the song was already nine years old....

    David Grieder|Updated Jun 25, 2019

PORTALES — On his entry June 12 to the Roosevelt County jail, Manuel Silva, Jr., 23, was “classified as a maximum security detainee” and “housed in a single occupancy cell.” Officials found him in that cell two days later unresponsive. They declared him dead less than an hour after that. According to an in-custody death report submitted Monday by Jail Administrator Justin Porter and obtained Tuesday by The News through a public records request, Silva was found around 3:45 p.m. June 14 in his cell. His body was “leaning...

  • Riches of God's grace still absolutely free

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jun 25, 2019

I still miss Andy Rooney. Where’s the old curmudgeon when you need him? Rooney’s commentary at the end of “60 Minutes” was always the cream of the show. (Speaking of dairy, I still thank him for pointing out that milk that a cow would claim is just 3.2% fat; I’ve never touched 2% or “skim” since.) After his death in 2011, five weeks after his last television commentary (number 1,097), the man has been irreplaceable. Go to commercial. It’s over. One of my favorite types...

  • Friend helped me use my head for right things

    Carrie Classon|Updated Jun 25, 2019

I’ve got a good friend, Ayo, who told me, “Don’t use your head to break a coconut.” As I wrote about in my memoir, Blue Yarn, I lived in Lagos, Nigeria, for almost four years, and I met Ayo there. Ayo is a smart woman and a voracious reader and she is full of good advice. Ayo is what they describe in Nigeria as “a serious person.” A serious person in Nigeria is one you can trust, someone who can be relied upon. The advice Ayo generally gives, however, annoys me because it challenges the way I think. “Have you considered going...

  • At least that ballplayer was 'gentlemanly'

    David Stevens|Updated Jun 25, 2019

Newspapers have long been criticized for crossing the line between “reporting” and “editorializing,” and for prying into people’s private lives. That may have been the case in June 1910 when the Roswell Record told its readers about the marriage of a Clovis baseball player. “The marriage of Miss (Mable) Ballard comes as a surprise to all,” the paper reported. “She is one of Roswell’s prettiest and most popular young women and that an out of town man would win her heart and hand without even the knowledge of her parents adds...

The sale will begin 10 a.m. at wildlife.state.nm.us. Customers are advised to review their online accounts prior to the sale and be signed on before the sale begins, as licenses are often purchased in a matter of minutes or seconds. Available are 763 deer, 85 youth-only pronghorn and four mobility-impaired-only-elk licenses. To purchase a leftover license, hunters must first p...
