CLOVIS — With just over a month left to apply for the state's sixth and final racino license, Clovis heard Thursday morning from the most recently-declared contender for a racetrack and casino project in the city. Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino General Manager Rick Baugh said during a meet-and-greet reception at the Norman and Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum that officials were interested in bringing quarter-horse racing to one of a few locations being considered in Clovis. • Forget the trivial - live with joy

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jun 28, 2018

Last week, a quote by D.L. Moody, the old preacher, popped up on daily quotes on my cell phone. Moody said: “The Lord gives his people perpetual joy when they walk in obedience to him.” Some synonyms for the word perpetual are: continuing, everlasting, uninterrupted, constant and permanent. So for the Christian, this joy has nothing to do with circumstances. Moody did not say we as Christians will have perpetual joy if we have a good job, if we have a healthy family or if we...

  • God chuckles and says, "Time for bed, child"

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jun 28, 2018

When I learned that CBS’ 60 Minutes news program was doing a story on sleep, I was interested. Sleeping is one thing I’ve always been very good at. But if anyone has pointers to help my technique ... So I made sure to watch what was a fascinating program, and I learned a lot. In 1980, a study was done using rats who were kept awake indefinitely. After five days, they began dying. They needed sleep as badly as they needed food. All mammals do. Modern folks in our society hav...

  • Curry leaves right-to-work issue for future

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jun 28, 2018

CLOVIS — Right-to-work won’t be coming to Curry County anytime soon. The Curry County Commission took no action regarding a potential right-to-work ordinance following a 30-minute discussion at Thursday’s meeting. “Its something that’s just been coming up more and more, something that I felt we needed to look at and discuss, I feel we’ve done that,” Chairman Ben McDaniel said. “If it comes up in the future, it comes up in the future. Just let it be, that’s my thought.” Commissioner Angelina Baca said she thinks any changes...

  • Reporter's Notebook: Dream of '60s still alive

    David Grieder|Updated Jun 28, 2018

Between the Gearhead Gathering during the day and Draggin' Main at night, Clovis will see a lot of old cars on Saturday — and every one of them has a story. One of the hopeful participants to take the customary circuit down Main Street is a relatively newer vehicle with a decidedly older look. You may already recognize it, since it's hard to miss and its owners said they've already been bombarded with admirers and peace-sign-flippers in recent weeks. Ian Regnier and Karime G...

the Staff of the News|Updated Jun 28, 2018

CLOVIS — There will be another contested race in Curry County in November, as a write-in candidate signed up Thursday for the county assessor’s race. Lunden Hromas signed up as a candidate for the assessor position. She was the only write-in candidate to file on Thursday, County Clerk Annie Hogland said. Current Assessor Candace Morrison did not face a challenger during the Republican primary earlier this month. She was appointed to the position following the retirement of Tim Lyman and won her first four-year term in 201...

  • Grand jury to hear escape cases today

    David Grieder|Updated Jun 28, 2018

CLOVIS — A grand jury will hear today the cases on five individuals charged in connection with the escape this month from the Curry County Detention Center. She remained Thursday evening in CCDC. Judge Drew Tatum denied the state’s request for pre-trial detention on Dodson, 28, noting “pretrial de... Full story
