SANTA FE — You can't legally buy it yet, but cannabis is no longer prohibited in New Mexico when it comes to possession and home growing. After years of debate, New Mexico became the 17th state to legalize recreational cannabis for users 21 and over Tuesday when a new law greenlighting the long illegal drug took effect. But the task of setting up a new weed industry from scratch is far from finished. A virtual rules hearing on the initial batch of proposed state rules governing marijuana licensing and plant count limits s...
Taking a ride in a hot air balloon was something that Clovis native Susan Montoya always wanted to do, one of the adventures on her bucket list that she talked to friends and coworkers about. So when word came down that the assistant principal at Albuquerque's Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School was transferring to another school, teachers and coworkers took it upon themselves to make that dream come true. They chipped in to purchase a balloon ride for Susan and three guests...

On this date … 1961: “Flying Saucers” were scheduled to be in Clovis on Aug. 3-5. That was the name the city's Retail Merchants committee decided on for its annual back-to-school and summer clearance sales promotions. Paper plates were slated to be thrown from the tops of downtown buildings during the promotion, which could be turned in for prizes. On Aug. 5, all the paper plates were to be dropped into a box with the name of the person who retrieved the paper plate written on it. The winner of that drawing was to recei...
Senior centers across the state are reopening on July 1, according to a release from the New Mexico Aging & Long-Term Services Department. Barbara Riggan, director of city of Clovis Senior Services, said the state has directed them to review the reopening guidance and formulate their own plan for the Friendship Senior Center. “We are working with city officials to put a plan into place,” Riggan said. She hopes to meet with the city today and then bring the plan before the city commission on Thursday for approval, she said. Ch...
Freedom. It is not a gift any government benevolently bestows upon its citizens; freedom is the gift of God to everyone created in his image. It is a serious blessing to live in a land founded by those who believed that the responsibility of our nation’s leaders was to recognize and protect the freedom that is already the birthright of those given life by their Creator. It’s a blessing to be able to celebrate on July 4 the birthday of a nation “conceived in liberty.” And, wh...
I recently saw a copy of one of the old printed shopping lists provided by Grady’s Food Market in Portales, the grocery store of my childhood. It’s funny how a small piece of paper can bring back so many memories. Grady’s got its start on the square, I’ve been told, as Grady’s Red and White Grocery. At some point before I was old enough to remember — or maybe even before I was born — it moved to 217 S. Ave. C in Portales, on the site now occupied by Aaron’s. Grady and Ethel...
ALBUQUERQUE - Clovis High senior Jerrick Maldonado came painfully close - literally and figuratively - to pulling off a rare triple on Saturday. Despite tweaking a muscle in his right leg during the week, Maldonado nearly swept the three boys distance races in Saturday's Class 5A meet at the University of New Mexico track facility. After winning the 3,200 and the 800 earlier in the day, Maldonado ran a season-best 4 minutes, 31.94 seconds to edge Rio Rancho Cleveland senior...
Soon after health officials waved a magic wand over the state COVID map and turned us all turquoise, it was announced that New Mexico is fully reopening July 1. It’s so close I can taste it. In fact, just the other day I went to my first sit-down restaurant in months. The least restrictive designation on our color-coded COVID map allowed that to happen — and more is on the way! After about 15 months of restrictions in New Mexico, the old ways are coming back. Now we’re pulling out all the stops. Previous travel restr...
You are smart enough to know a hammer is the wrong tool for driving a screw. Yes, It can work in an emergency, but it isn’t best and can cause future problems. Either use a screwdriver for the screw or find a nail for the hammer. In the same way, government is the wrong tool for solving society’s problems. It might appear to work, but you’d do better to find the right tool for the job. A social tool, not an antisocial tool. Politics is antisocial. Someone only wins by makin...

Sometimes the Supreme Court protects constitutional rights best when it doesn’t establish what lawyers call a bright-line rule applicable to every possible future situation. That was the case last Wednesday when the court ruled in favor of a high school cheerleader who had been disciplined for a vulgar outburst on social media. In Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L., the justices ruled 8-1 that a Pennsylvania school district violated the free speech rights of Brandi Levy when it suspended her from her school’s junior var...

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Supreme Court has granted a review of a New Mexico Court of Appeals decision upholding the 2019 convictions of former Portales daycare owners Sandi and Mary Taylor. The Monday order by the state’s highest court granted a petition from the Taylors, who were sentenced to 30 and 36 years in prison, respectively, after two children in their care were left in a hot vehicle for 2 hours and 40 minutes in July 2017. Maliyah Jones, 22 months, died as a result of the incident. Aubri Loya, then 23 months, was...

Not long before school was out, I had the opportunity to sit in on a district-wide librarians' meeting. Librarians are a special breed of educator. An article entitled, “The Nonnegotiable Role of School Librarians” describes the essential function of libraries and librarians in public education, as the “hub of the school” in terms of learning. Clovis schools have the most amazing group of librarians. All of our librarians come from rich and varied backgrounds, bringin...

"(Kayla) is a mentor to everyone around her and has a wealth of knowledge," said Tracy Agiovlasitas, chairperson of the awards committee. "She is really good at meeting different people with different...
After a year of canceled and delayed travel plans, area residents seem to be using Clovis' Regional Airport (abbreviated as CVN) now more than ever. A whirlwind of changes over the last 12 months has left passengers with a new airline, Denver Air Connection, and a new Transportation Security Administration terminal. Many seem to be liking the new airline and jets, said Airport Director James Harris, though he still hears from those who wish the airport had service to Texas....
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University should expect to know its new athletic director in the next few days, Chancellor Patrice Caldwell told ENMU regents during their Saturday afternoon meeting. Entering the Saturday meeting, the college had brought three of its four candidates onto the campus. Heavy rains across the region aren't expected to end anytime soon. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch through Monday night for Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca counties, and rainfall was still consistent in the area Tuesday morning. "(Additional) rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches combined with slow and erratic storm motions will enhance the risk of localized flash flooding," NWS warned on its website. Local law enforcement did not report any weather-related...
CLOVIS - Nobody said, "This is why we can't have nice things." But the sentiment was more than palpable during a discussion of public bathrooms at Clovis' various parks Monday night. The frustrating topic of bathroom vandalism took center stage during a lengthy Parks, Recreation and Beautification meeting at Roy Walker Recreation Center, with Parks and Recreation Director Russell Hooper telling committee members the problem is constant. The more features a bathroom has, like l...
