  • For sale: A New Mexico community called Pep

Betty Williamson, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 30, 2024

Editor's note: This is the first in a two-part series about that time in 1978 when Gray and Sara Wilson bought the Roosevelt County community of Pep. I don't know. I'm working through some of that stuff." As Pride Month winds down, Smith is also trying to figure out how to wisely approach the topic of LGBTQ+ and Christianity as...

  • Conversation starters vary from age to age and culture to culture

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jun 29, 2024

How do you start a conversation? I’ve never relished small talk, especially at a social event, but over the years I’ve taught myself to do it and I think I’m actually pretty good at it when I need to be. One of the strangest parts of human conversation, however, has to be the greeting. Whether we’re beginning a conversation in a business or social setting, on the phone or in person, our society requires that some sort of greeting is exchanged to start the conversation or you...

There was a measure of discussion on the matter. Commissioner Seth Martin was concerned the c...

  • Opinion: Keep independence part of holiday

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jun 29, 2024

Do you celebrate Independence Day, or do you celebrate the Fourth of July instead? It’s the difference between celebrating insurrection, secession, and the violent overthrow of a tyrannical government in the cause of independence, or demonstrating your loyalty to an even more tyrannical government and its military. I know which one most people celebrate. Most holidays get corrupted and co-opted over time. Complaints about the commercialization of Christmas are as t...

  • Opinion: Reality check needed on super weapons

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Jun 29, 2024

In his blog, Dances With Bears, John Helmer writes, “In war, exaggeration is a killer. In the media, exaggeration is a bestseller.” The corollary to this is, “In war, it’s OK to BS everybody else, but don’t BS yourself.” Hellmer goes on to note that in Ukraine, the “war fighters” believe that just one more brilliant operation carried out with derring-do by special operators can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Let’s look at one of the super weapons that were suppose...

  • Opinion: Ten Commandments postings sign of a larger political agenda

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 29, 2024

Louisiana Gov. While other states have proposed similar bills, no one besides Louisiana has been successful enacting such efforts, especially with the threat of legal battles looming o...

Joy Garratt, D-Albuquerque; Alan Martinez, R-Rio Rancho; and Andrea Reeb, R-Clovis, came together on Tuesday for a town hall on crime, the second such forum hosted by...

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 29, 2024

I just learned that Allsup’s headquarters is no longer in Clovis. I knew the company was sold several years ago. I was curious how many local HQ employees were laid off. Just personal curiosity. Allsup’s was purchased by the now Fort Worth-based convenience store chain Yesway in 2019. Yesway officials last week did not respond to The News. But an August 2020 article in The News reported the closure of Allsup’s headquarters on Thornton Street in Clovis. The closure was expected to result in 201 positions at the former headq...
