  • We are all entitled to our own opinions

Recently, I have been reminded that this is a free country and that we all have freedom of speech. I assure you, I am fully aware. In regard to a recent column, I received a tremendous amount of feedback. And honestly, I can say that at least 95 percent of it was positive. So many people made mention that they are completely supportive of the growth of our base. We are all our fully capable of voicing our opinions, whether positive or negative, regarding the accommodations that we have in the area. However, the main point...

  • Heat driving up feed prices for dairies

While dairy cattle are holding up well in the hot, dry weather, the drought is sending forage prices skyrocketing, cutting profits, local members of the dairy industry have said. Dairies deal with heat stress in cattle every summer, said Alan Anderson of Anderson Dairy near Portales. “The problem is the hay shortage,” Anderson said. Because of drought, farmers haven’t been able to grow as much hay, and with the low quantities, prices rose. Anderson said prices are up to $300 a ton, compared to $160-$180 per ton at this time...

  • Freedom comes with limitations

The week leading up to Independence Day made it glaringly obvious to me that few people today really know what freedom means. Sure, they know and use the word, but it is something like the word relativity to them: Something they have heard of and that they might think they understand because of how others have explained it to them. Often that explanation is in error. Few are so completely clueless that they believe, as former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is quoted as saying in a speech in March 1994, that “freedom is about... Full story

  • Texas couple reunited with lost dog in Tucumcari

Russell Anglin Forth Worth, Texas, retirees Chick and Lee Gardner were devastated to find their search-and-rescue dog, a black labrador retriever named Chance, missing from their car and care while returning from a California vacation Saturday night. The couple realized that one of their three search-and-rescue dogs was not in the car with them when they stopped in an Amarillo hotel Saturday night. It turns out Chance had hopped out of their car to pay patrons a visit earlier that evening when Chick and Lee stopped at the Fly...

  • Trim budget starts with ending wars

Freedom New Mexico As the U.S. Congress haggles over raising the debt ceiling, it needs to look behind the figures. Yes, the overall numbers are staggering. The U.S. government has run up so much debt that it soon will surpass the current legal debt limit of $14.3 trillion. That’s $14,300,000,000,000.00. The budget deficit for the 2011 fiscal year, which ends on September 30, is projected to be $1.5 trillion. We’ve long warned that the profligate spending of the last 10 years would lead to such a fiscal disaster; the res...

  • Letter to the editor: Crossing borders illegally makes you a criminal

We don’t always agree with our Roosevelt County commissioners, but this instance we agree 100 percent. When the illegal immigrants crossed our borders they made themselves criminals. Our governor and county commissioners had nothing to do with this. Anytime you disobey our laws you are a criminal. Our laws were made for a reason and we think if the citizens from other countries want to come into the United States, they should do so the way the laws were written and not slip into our country. We would bet you wouldn’t wan...

  • Badgering prey makes little sense

My brother and I came upon a badger out in the pasture one summer afternoon. He looked at us. We looked at him. He glared at us and looked mean, so we thought we should return his angry stare. His body was muscular, and his mottled brownish gray fur was highlighted by a white streak from the back of his neck to the end of his nose, and white streaks down each side of his face. His head looked like he’d been stepped on — flattened from top to bottom. He wasn’t afraid of us. In fact, he acted downright belligerent. So we...

  • Commissaries to be consolidated

In these tight budget times, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee has learned it must cut current spending to fund new initiatives for veterans. For example, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., committee chairman, would pay for her Hiring Heroes Act of 2011 by extending by three years, to 2014, a higher fee on veterans who reuse their VA home loan authority. So the committee agreed that current fee of 3.3 percent for “subsequent” home loan usage, set to fall to 2.15 percent Oct. 1, should only fall now to 3.0 percent. The full Con... Full story

  • Dairy owners say drought shriveling profits

Alisa Boswell: Portales News-Tribune Cass Anderson feeds cattle on his family's dairy near Portales Thursday afternoon. • My turn: Family time always fun

I love holidays that revolve around quality family fun time. This Independence Day holiday definitely turned out to be a memorable one for me. The UFO Festival in Roswell had great music and other entertainment, such as a wine festival, a lot of souvenir stores and an alien costume contest. A boy around 5 or 6 years old got a well-deserved second place for the children’s contest because he dressed as a Transformer and actually transformed on stage. A sight I won’t soon forget. Two of my friends dressed up as Men in Bla...

  • Today is a gift from God

The holiday is over. The house is sadly quiet. When will I stop crying when my loved ones leave? I ask God to keep angels to guard them safely home. I find little cars under the sofa and shoes that aren’t mine under the bed. Boys that use to live here are grown men with babes of their own. I smile when I see them wrestling on the floor, but it’s time to go. The goodbyes are over, and about 4 p.m. the phone calls come. “Hi, Mom. We’re home. We love you, Mom, and we had such a good time.” Where did the time go? Wasn’t it just y... Full story
