A physician’s assistant from Roswell has been arrested and charged with felony sexual penetration. Jon E. Perry, 52, is charged under a state law prohibiting medical professionals from engaging in sex with a patient during treatment or within a year after treatment ends, according to New Mexico State Police investigator Justin Tiemann. The case against Perry developed when a patient of his, a Roosevelt County woman whose initials are R.F., consulted a Clovis attorney about incidents that happened during and after her t...

  • Spent some time remembering a few good burgers

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jul 9, 2022

Having lunch with a couple of guys that are older fogies than myself, I couldn’t win, So I just listened. The talk turned to hamburgers and how cheap we used to buy them growing up. When they got down to a quarter, I knew I couldn’t beat that myself. I can maybe remember a 35-cent burger growing up but mostly I would say they were 50 to 80 cents back then. In high school nearly every day at lunch I had the same thing -- jumbo cheeseburger, fries and cherry Coke at Pat’s Twin...

  • Our People: A passion for music and service

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Jul 9, 2022

Music, photography and service have been Tres Morgan's driving passions for as long as he can remember. People in Clovis know Morgan as a professional photographer by trade, but they also know his powerful singing voice as a leader of praise music at the Legacy Church in Clovis and for several rock bands in town. Morgan has served on committees that organized music for Draggin' Main and the Clovis Music Festival in recent years. This year, he served on the Clovis Music...

  • Opinion: Hard to find justice in rape cases

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

So what does all this tell us about justice? “All this” meaning the fact that Ghislaine Maxwell got 20 years and R. Kelly got 30. It was, make no mistake, an indisputably good thing to see those punishments handed down. And it’s hard to blame anyone who found in it a reason to rejoice. It’s also difficult to join them. Understand: you will find no remorse here over the likelihood that the 55-year-old former R&B hit maker and the 60-year-old former socialite will grow old in...

  • Opinion: July 4 neither safe nor sane

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

I doubt if there is any law on the books that is more flagrantly and routinely violated every year by otherwise law-abiding residents of our state than city restrictions on fireworks. Under the “Safe and Sane” fireworks law, the only things that can legally be set off in my city of Las Cruces are ground and hand-held sparkling and smoking devices, cylindrical fountains, flitter sparklers, illuminating torches, smoke devices and wheels. That leaves out bottle rockets, cherry bombs, black cats … pretty much anything that bangs...

  • Opinion: Pro-lifers must work to love and care for 'unwanted' babies

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

It’s been a fabulous few weeks for conservatives, Republicans and millions of ordinary Americans. I cheered all of the Supreme Court’s recent blockbusters – for moral, political and personal reasons. I’m 100 percent pro-life. I believe adults should be free to own and carry guns. I believe there should be more prayer in schools, not less. And I don’t want unelected federal bureaucrats writing laws about the environment or anything else that Congress should be writing. But the...

  • Opinion: Biden needs a class in Econ 101

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

For Joe Biden, the buck stops with small independent business owners trying to make ends meet. Over the holiday weekend, the president slammed gas stations for the purported sin of not passing along declining oil prices to motorists. Biden took to Twitter to urge “the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump” to heed his message: “Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product.” Yes, sir, whatever...

  • Opinion: Scolding gas stations wrong fight to pick

    Chicago Tribune, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

To hear President Joe Biden tell it, high gasoline prices aren’t his fault. Those looking for someone to blame should direct their anger instead at what he describes as “the companies running gas stations.” In a much-ridiculed tweet, the nation’s commander in chief ordered those unnamed companies to cut the price of gasoline at the pump “to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.” This was not the first time Biden tried to blame others for gasoline prices that hit record highs last month and threaten...

  • Opinion: Door lock lessons are needed

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Jul 9, 2022

I thought I had a pretty fair understanding of how door locks worked until I read the reports involving the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. According to news reports, the shooter entered the school through a door with a lock that could only be locked from the outside, and then got into a classroom through a door that had a “busted lock.” The busted lock is really immaterial, since the classroom door also had a lock that could not be locked from the ins...

  • In tribute: Terry Moberly remembered for service, kindness

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Jul 9, 2022

Terry Moberly is remembered as putting the needs of others and the communities he served before his own and for having fun doing it. • Texas abortion clinics may be coming to New Mexico

    Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 9, 2022

FORT WORTH - Whole Woman's Health is shuttering its four clinics in Texas and working to move to New Mexico to offer abortion services. The abortion provider has clinics in Fort Worth, McKinney, Austin and McAllen, but after Roe v. Whole Woman's Health has launched a GoFundMe to raise money to move to New Mexico, where abortion laws are less restrictive, according...

The Staff of The News|Updated Jul 9, 2022

  • Texas man found dead in Oasis State Park

David Stevens, The Staff of the News|Updated Jul 9, 2022

Doug Eaton loved mountain climbing. That’s where he’d been the past three weeks, hiking up 23 different peaks, each at least 14,000 feet high. The dream vacation was ending last week. He contacted his mother late Wednesday afternoon and told her he would reach her home near Abilene in a few hours. But first he was planning to take a short nap at Oasis State Park near Portales. Family members never heard from Eaton again. His body and his pickup truck were found late Thu... Full story
