  • Giving generously is a privilege

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jul 13, 2018

This last week I was reading an article in Psychology Today about giving. The name of the article was “Well Being and Giving” by Steve Taylor. This is what the writer wrote: “If anything, it appears that there is a relationship between non-materialism and well-being. While possessing wealth and material goods doesn’t lead to happiness, giving them away actually does. Generosity is strongly associated with well-being.” (January 9. 2015) Are Taylor’s observations right? In a...

  • Rams getting ready

    Eric Murray|Updated Jul 13, 2018

PORTALES — Before a football team can celebrate state championships and all the glory that comes with them, it must first think about getting better everyday. July and August may be the dog days of summer for baseball, but in football, it could be the difference between a playoff berth and sitting home in November. On Thursday night, Portales hosted 7-on-7 scrimmages against Eunice, Lovington and Muleshoe. The round-robin scrimmages lasted 20 minutes apiece, with the first g...

CLOVIS — Local police have recovered at least two trucks stolen this week, with other recent property crime cases still under investigation. On Monday night, at least two home burglaries were reported on the same street on the city's west side. In one, a couple returned around 8:45 p.m. to their residence on the 1000 block of Cypress Street to find "the back sliding glass door had been destroyed and their house had been ransacked," according to a police report. A 19-inch TV w... Full story

  • Local schools bump English, math scores

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jul 12, 2018

Students in eastern New Mexico and around the state continue to show progress on English and math exams but are still falling short of proficiency. The New Mexico Public Education Department on Thursday released the results of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests students took in April. Both Clovis and Portales experienced increases in proficiency for English language arts and math, but the 2018 results in both subjects show still nearly seven out of 10 students are not reaching... Full story

  • Former coach scheduled for plea conference

    David Grieder|Updated Jul 12, 2018

CLOVIS — Charged in September with sending nude images to a student, a former assistant track coach for Clovis Christian School is scheduled for a plea conference next month. Garrett Scott Fly, 24, was scheduled for a jury trial next week on a fourth-degree felony charge of criminal sexual communication with a child, according to court records. That was canceled this week and his attorney Dan Lindsey filed a “notice of intent to plea and disposition,” instead. Per the agreement signed Tuesday by Fly, Lindsey and Distr...

  • A home renovation is easier than a soul upgrade

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jul 12, 2018

It was a joy last week to finally come out of the closet. Well, perhaps I’d better rephrase that lest you get the wrong idea. And, to be completely accurate, I probably should say “out of the closets.” Two of them. For clarity, maybe I’d better back up and take another run at this.
