These days I don’t get out all that much. I find shoes and socks for the kids, fill up sippy cups, put shoes back on after being kicked off, chase all three to the car, get the first car seat buckled, look around for the straying child, who is no doubt chasing a cat or wandering off somewhere, get the other two kids secured and finally climb into the driver’s seat. I am completely exhausted and likely a bit sweaty. Yes, my life is a run-on sentence. Remember, we have yet to leave the driveway. Now we have finally pre...

Portales has two new wells, but mandatory water restrictions may last the rest of the summer, according to city officials. To keep water storage levels high enough, city water users were banned from outdoor watering in late June and early July, and restrictions limiting which days users can water their yards have been in place since June 16. “The rains have helped, because the use has come down,” City Manager Tom Howell said. Mayor Sharon King said people watered less after the storms this week. “Right now, our levels are h...
This may sound strange but I have recently discovered how much fun it is to encourage others, whether you know them or not. It may not quite fall into the category of entertainment but it’s always fun nonetheless. The mother of a friend of mine who lives out of town was recently battling cancer and feeling discouraged. As many cancer survivors as I know in Clovis and Portales, I was struck with the idea of buying a journal and filling it with encouraging messages from other cancer survivors. I then passed the journal along to...
Congressman Steve Pearce addressed the president’s false claims that he “cannot guarantee” Social Security payments in the absence of a debt ceiling agreement. “The president claimed that ‘there may simply not be money in the coffers,’ to fund Social Security, but this is simply not true,” said Pearce. “The country is still generating revenue, and as the president is well aware, this year’s revenues will be more than enough to cover Social Security and Medicare. We don’t need the job-killing tax increases the president has pr...

Politically minded people are starting to anticipate election season. This means many of them will be asking the wrong questions of the candidates; who will be all-too willing to answer them. We are already hearing politicians detailing what they would do about things that no government, nor any politician, has any authority to be involved in. Things such as the economy and job creation, to pick a couple of prime examples. Sure those things are important, and the natural desire of many seems to be to find or place someone in...

Sometimes I feel as if I’ve spent my whole life looking up at the sky, hoping to see rain clouds. That’s left over from being a child during the infamously drouthy 1950s I’m sure. These days I’m joined by the city folks who usually ignore such things. We’re all looking up hoping to see some fluffy white — or dark blue even better — clouds in the middle of all that blue sky. It’s not pleasant to look at the sky and see smoke and flames instead of rain clouds. People are even praying for rain, which reminds me...

The sorrel filly with the flax mane and tail was the one he wanted as soon as he set eyes on her. “She caught my eye as soon as I came down the steps,” Jerry Williams said. About 30 people turned out for the opening of the event, most as spectators. Within the first hou...

On an airline flight recently, I was seated by a young Army soldier going home from Afghanistan. We began talking, and the soldier told me of a recent event in a remote village in Afghanistan. There is a small and impoverished village in Afghanistan that has no means of getting clean water. Every morning, the village women gather at a certain spot in the village to gather water for their families. In a group, these women make the long and treacherous journey up the rocky...

Bibles of older relatives have been passed down to me. My grandfather’s Bible is almost threadbare, but I cherish those tattered pages. “The Good Book,” as he called it, was the guiding force of his life. Early dawn found him in his favorite chair with the Bible opened across his lap. “This Book of Wisdom has answers to life’s problems,” he used to say. He proved it by living a long blessed life of biblical principles. Granny wrote notes all over her Bible. She loved to talk about “God’s Word.” She gave chapter and verse to m...
