CLOVIS — Laser throws to first, without an arc. Middle infielders on second base before the double-play throw comes. Relay throwers in place in case the runner tags on that outfield fly. It sometimes feels like a baseball team is on the field, and it definitely doesn't feel like a bunch of junior high players when the Clovis American junior softball team gets a practice going. "I've never had this much talent on a team," coach Kelly Tindle said Wednesday. "They should do C...

Transportation is critical in any walk of life. In order to do much of anything, you need to get to where you are going. Crawling is the method of choice for babies and when the house is on fire and you don’t want to breathe so much smoke. Walking is choice if the distance is short, the time is long, or there’s no alternative. Running is for emergencies and races only. Unicycles are for clowns and people who like to learn things for no reason. Bicycles are not for when you...
A city of Clovis employee was recently arrested, accused of carrying a gun in a Dallas airport. This may or may not be cause for alarm, depending on the details that have not been made public. What’s clearly cause for alarm, however, is the effort city officials have put into preventing taxpayers from finding out about the incident and their efforts to quash those details. Here’s what we know after more than a half-dozen public records requests sent to four public entities: • Paul Nelson, 40, the city’s information technol...
CLOVIS — The city employee arrested with a gun in a Dallas airport last month began his trip from Clovis Municipal Airport, city officials said on Thursday. The city’s information technology director, Paul Nelson, was arrested June 11 for carrying a gun in a secure part of Dallas Love Field Airport while traveling to Washington, D.C., on a city-financed trip, records show. It was not immediately clear if Nelson could have carried a gun on the flight out of Clovis. Nelson has declined to discuss the issue. City Finance Dir...

PORTALES - When Dana Pergeson heard her smoke alarm late Thursday morning, she assumed it just needed a change of batteries. But when she got up to check, she found a small fire in the bedroom of her West Spruce Street home. In the time it took her to grab a bucket of water to extinguish it, the flames had spread to envelop the living room. "She came out and hollered for my dad, and then she grabbed a mattress, threw it out, and grabbed the water hose, but it was too much,"...

It was in Boston several years ago that I first saw a genuine lighthouse. While driving out toward the tip of Cape Cod, we stopped to explore a lighthouse that was open to visitors. Standing on the sandy hillside surrounded by wooden fencing, the lighthouse silently spoke volumes. Positioned on a small hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, old and withered with age, that lighthouse could really have told some stories if only it could communicate. At the base of the lighthouse...
It is no proof of superior intelligence, but even as a young man I was theoretically sure that I would not always be a young man. As I (rarely) contemplated middle or old age, though they seemed light years away, I figured that a major consolation of being old and crotchety, say, 45, would be that by then I would probably have found answers to a great many of life’s most vexing questions. I’m an incredibly vibrant 60 years old now. Since I can’t imagine much worse than living...
