  • Letter to the editor — July 7

Hope owners rethink fun center I heartily agree with Alan McAlister’s letter to the editor in Sunday’s paper regarding the so-called family fun center being built in Hilltop Plaza. Now there will be another opportunity for parents to park their children in front of a television screen to be “entertained” while they go off and do their own thing. I hope the owners will re-think that option and instead have a supervised area where children can explore their creative minds. Carolyn Stag Clovis...

  • Star-spangled holiday

link Staff photo: Tony Bullocks Area residents watch the Smoke on the Water fireworks display Saturday at Greene Acres Park. More photos on page 12. Staff Writer [email protected] The holiday action started well before the sun came up for Jason Aven and Joe Cabezuela as a thunderstorm rolled through the area and flooded their Clovis fireworks business tent Saturday morning. But by noon the water cleared and the carpet was merely damp as the coaches from Hereford helped a...

Question: You are working on reversing a state Supreme Court ruling last year that says only one charge of possession of child pornography can be brought, even if a defendant has multiple illegal images. Can you provide an update? Reeb: “Rep. Randy Crowder (R-Clovis) sponsored a bill last (le...

  • Stevens: Baseball ghosts fill Bell Park

link David Stevens The history of eastern New Mexico usually begins with Clovis Man about 13,000 years ago, then skips to Billy the Kid at Portales Springs and usually ends up in Norman Petty’s rock and roll recording studio. But my favorite regional ghosts began gathering in a field of dreams on East Seventh Street in Clovis at least 86 years ago. The history of Bell Park came up last week in an email announcing former Albuquerque Journal reporter Toby Smith has written a boo...

  • Clovis woman enters Alford plea in child-abuse case

Deputy Editor [email protected] A Clovis woman entered an Alford plea Thursday in federal court to multiple counts of child abuse. Kayla Bass, 25, “didn’t plead guilty,” her attorney Jonathon Miller said. “There was evidence that could convict her, however, she maintains her factual innocence.” An Alford plea, according to the Legal Information Institute at Cornell University Law School, “registers a formal claim neither of guilt nor innocence toward charges brought against a defendant in criminal court.” But anyone pl...

  • Commissioner: Washington D.C. trip 'no vacation'

Deputy Editor [email protected] Curry County Commissioner Tim Ashley said his trip to Washington, D.C., last month was no vacation, but instead a “grueling” few days packed with several workshops that can help the county get the most out of its relationship with Cannon Air Force Base. “There were multiple workshops that I attended,” Ashley said of his trip to the Association of Defense Communities 2015 National Summit, which lasted June 22-24. “It’s 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with workshops all day long. It’s pretty grueling hone...

The v...

  • Discussion tabled for new jail roof

Staff Writer [email protected] Curry County commissioners tabled an action to approve a bid for $592,900 from DKG & Associates to re-roof the Curry County Jail at their regular meeting Tuesday morning. “It's about three times what it should be,” said Chairman Ben McDaniel. “I've bought a whole lot of flat roofs, and this is obscene.” According to County Finance Director Carol Pipes, the bid proposed to the commissioners was the lowest of only two bids to re-roof the jail. County Manager Lance Pyle said the roof has not...

  • Rodriguez: Times have changed in Portales

    Helena Rodriguez

link Helena Rodriguez Many of the long, hot, summer days of my childhood in Portales were not so much about north vs. south as much as they were about north meets south. Our childhood home was on North Avenue B, considered the barrio or, as we residents ourselves call it, “Taco Town.” My Grandma Emma happened to live on South Avenue B — just a hop and skip to the railroad tracks and then over the railroad tracks, past East First Street (the only main crossing), and then about...

  • Rodriguez: Tiempos han cambiado en Portales

    Helena Rodriguez

  • Letters to the editor — July 1

Christians need to fight for faith, freedom So — according to a 5-4 ruling by the Supreme Court, homosexual marriage is Constitutional. That may be, but it doesn’t make it right (and God disagrees), nor does it mean most Americans support it (and we do not) or that all states have to endorse it. The Supreme Court justices can only say it is Constitutional in their opinion. They have no power to enforce it. After all, alcohol is Constitutional if you are of the age but that doesn’t mean that some states can’t choose to be d...

  • Marriage issues for individuals, not government

Last week’s Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage hasn’t changed anyone’s way of thinking. The religious right still believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Trumpeters of equal rights still believe gay couples deserve to be treated the same as heterosexual couples. The only thing that changed is the law, which no longer bans same-sex couples from receiving government’s endorsement of their union. But maybe this emotional issue will ultimately spur a more worthwhile initiative — one in which individua...

  • McDonald: Social stigmas changing in today's world

link Tom McDonald Americans have seen a lot of civil rights advancements over the past half-century, with a launching point for other causes coming with the modern-day Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and ’60s. That’s when some inalienable rights for African Americans finally took hold, especially but not exclusively in the South, where I was born and raised. I was ushered into that era by my white father and mother, who rejected the heritage of hate that surrounded the...

MANAGING EDITOR [email protected] Former jail administrator David Casanova is threatening to sue his ex-employer, alleging he was forced off the job as retaliation over his request for a mold inspection at the Roosevelt County Detention Center. Portales Attorney Eric Dixon presented Roosevelt County with a tort claim Tuesday afternoon on behalf of Casanova. Casanova resigned from the position in mid-June, and the county is in the process of interviewing for a replacement. County Manager Amber Hamilton declined comment...
