  • Pets, too, need to keep an eye on the pounds

    Sharna Johnson|Updated Jul 18, 2017

The first hint may be pants that appear to be smaller, though you know they haven’t shrunk. Or maybe one day you realize your seat belt is hidden by pudge. One way or another, humans figure it out when they’re losing the battle of the bulge. With pets it’s a little harder to know what they should look like, particularly since their bodies are shaped differently than ours and there aren’t always examples of the same age and breed handy to compare them. As with humans, pet obe...

I went to see the pond on Sunday evening. I've been there before, dozens of times, usually with a breakfast burrito, just sitting in the car, enveloped by the serenity, watching the joggers and the dog walkers and the ducks, appreciating the trees, wondering if it's Clovis' best candidate for a picture postcard. The pond, surrounded by a temporary fence and drained for safety, didn't seem like a little slice of heaven anymore. It...

PORTALES — An eastern New Mexico organization that connects sexual assault survivors to resources just hit a growth spurt. Arise Sexual Assault Services, a branch of Roosevelt General Hospital, moved Monday to the previous site of Victory Life Church at 801 W. 18th St. from its location at 1412 S. Ave. O and, according to Director Leigh Ana Eugene, provides increased anonymity for survivors. "At our old facility, we had the one entrance, so anyone coming in would be meeting p...

  • 'Everybody loved to watch him play'

    David Stevens|Updated Jul 18, 2017

CLOVIS — When Gevion Lewis stepped to the plate, the crowds would go quiet. "Everybody in the stands knew ... he would put on a show," said Alex Fernandez, whose son was Gevion's teammate on the Clovis Crush softball team. "He would hit home runs like it was nothing. It's not common for a 12-year-old to hit home runs. Out of the park home runs. He had a natural swing. Everybody loved to watch him play." There was a lot to love about Gevion, friends said on Monday as they m...

  • Motorcycle on display at mall stolen

    Anna George|Updated Jul 17, 2017

CLOVIS — The legend rolls on. But Clovis police aren’t quite sure where it went. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle displayed at Clovis’ North Plains Mall was stolen about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. Police said a man and woman took the bike away on a dolly without anyone asking any questions. “It is not abnormal for vendors to change out their products but they usually alert security when they do that sort of thing,” Clovis Police Capt. Roman Romero said on Monday afternoon. “Nothing of that sort was done.” While Romero theorized the...
