U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) discusses how a default on the nation’s debt would impact New Mexicans: “Failure to extend the debt ceiling would be a real crisis for our state, with every New Mexican paying the price,” Udall said. If the debt ceiling is not raised before the Aug. 2 deadline, federal officials have said that the revenue coming into the government will not be enough to cover its obligations — putting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, military payments, student loan payments, and man...
Advocates for military commissaries are optimistic they can sideline a Senate Veterans Affairs Committee plan that would end subsidies of base grocery stores so the same money could pay for health care of veterans and families exposed years ago to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, N.C. But as momentum builds on Capitol Hill to protect shopping discounts on base, prospects dim for passage this year of the Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act (S 277) with its cost of $4 billion over the first 10 years. The bill’s sponsor i...

I’ve run into Gary Johnson two times. The first was at a 1998 New Mexico Press Association conference in Albuquerque. I was taken by the sincerity he took in listening and addressing me in our brief talk. The second was a connecting flight from Salt Lake City to Albuquerque in 2003. He was a row behind me, engaged in a book. I saw no reason to interrupt him, and pulled out my book. At baggage claim, I told another passenger, “The former governor was on our plane.” That passenger, who was sitting next to Johnson, said, “Whic...

Ethan Ortega, a 20-year-old anthropology major, said he began researching field opportunities on the Internet after university archeology professors encouraged him and other archeology students to get hands-on experience before reaching graduate school. “I’d heard from a few professors that you need to explore different programs to see...
