Curry County’s jail administrator, the executive director of Portales’ Chamber of Commerce and the deputy director of the Eastern Plains Council of Governments are among 37 applicants for Portales’ vacant city manager position. The city released the applicants’ names last week in response to an Inspection of Public Records Act request from The News. Interim City Manager T.J. Cathey said the position will remain open until “the right person” is found to fill it. The city began accepting applications soon after Sarah Austi...
Water conservation continues to be at the forefront of discussion for the Portales City Council. At their regular meeting Tuesday, councilors heard a presentation from Mike Davidson, a resident of the community and member of the public works and water advisory committees. Davidson said the current state of water usage in Portales shows the community uses around 900 million gallons of water each year. That number needs to go down to 700 million for sustainability. Davidson went on to say that while the Ute pipeline project...
Tate Turnbough spent a portion of his youth on a farm in Curry County. "I can definitely put the plow in the ground and run a combine all day, but my farming skills are nonexistent compared to my late grandfather Dean Campbell. He was the best farmer God ever created, and I'd bet the farm on that," Turnbough said. Turnbough shared a bit about his life recently with The News. Q: You started out as a Curry Countian. A: I am from north of Clovis. I was raised on my grandparents'...
Roosevelt County has reached an agreement with Portales native and longtime Elida schools business manager Annette Kirk to be the next county manager. Commissioners agreed to offer her the job on Tuesday after rescinding their offer to Gowan Hays. Commission Chair Tina Dixon said she negotiated the deal with Kirk, who will begin her new duties on Aug. 12. Dixon said the county will pay Kirk $105,000 annually, the same as they had offered Hays. Dixon said “minor details” were the reason Hays gave for declining the pos...

But in that tournament, which hosted 250-plus boys' teams of various age levels from various U.S. states and Puerto Rico, Adrian's mom, Jennifer, pointed out another reason for her...

My precious mother’s head has always been in the clouds. Her beautiful gray hair even looks a little like a cloud. On a recent car trip with her she out of the blue announced, “there’s an elephant.” Well, I dang near wrecked the car looking for that elephant until I realized she was looking up at the puffy white cloud formations and picking out the ones that looked like an object or animal. She’s always gazed at the clouds to see what they had to offer. I shouldn’t...

On May 12, 2023, officers with the Clovis Police Department placed Cheryl Yazzie under arrest for concealing identity and placed her in the back seat of a patrol car, according to a news release from Ray. Yazzie began kicking the windows, so an officer opened the door to the car and told her to stop kicking. Yazzie then kicked the officer in the head, the release stated. Judge...

The Portales woman with Alzheimer’s, missing since July 13, was found dead late Wednesday morning, Roosevelt County Sheriff Javier Sanchez said. “Family members … located her on the opposite side of the railroad tracks from (U.S.) 70. It’s like a little ditch area,” Sanchez said. Mary Stinnett, 58, was found “relatively near where she was last seen,” the sheriff said. Sanchez said searchers flew a drone over the area several times but had no luck locating Stinnett. The sheriff said he did not immediately have any additiona...
The Clovis Community College Board of Trustees will be accepting proposals again to complete the expansion of the Allied Health Services building. In early April, trustees selected DAVTEK Corp. of Clovis as the contractor. However, in a letter of protest from EPX Construction Partners, CCC found some “irregularities” in the bid submitted by DAVTEK. “The primary area of concern with the DAVTEK proposal was subcontractor identification for some of the scopes of work,” Bob Dart, interim vice president of IT & Operations for CCC...
On this date ... 1946: Brothers Charles and Lee Tosh referred to themselves as mortal enemies of prairie dogs. But the owners of Empy’s Welding and Machine Shop also fancied themselves “humane” in the way they went about eradicating the little burrowers, the Clovis News-Journal reported. “Every opportunity that they get they will go out and try to help the farmer or rancher by ‘knocking off’ some of the animals with guns,” the newspaper reported. “All in all, the brothers have killed thousands of prairie dogs.” Their mo...
SANTA FE — Five hours and no action on her crime-related agenda. The outcome of a special session prompted fiery criticism from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who called Thursday one of the most disappointing days of her career. “The Legislature as a body walked away from their most important responsibility: keeping New Mexicans safe,” Lujan Grisham said in a statement. “The Legislature should be embarrassed at their inability to summon even an ounce of courage to adopt common-sense legislation to make New Mexicans safer,...
Harry Truman reportedly said that the Joe Rosenthal photo of the flag raising on Iwo Jima guaranteed the existence of the U.S. Marine Corps for the next 100 years. Truman was right. The photo became an icon throughout the nation and a monument in Washington, D.C. The Trump political rally held in Pennsylvania a week ago has created another such moment in history. The heroic image of a bloodied Donald J. Trump, rising out of a crowd of secret service personnel, Old Glory...
Once again, some evil loser killed a person, but not the specific one he wished to kill. Donald Trump, his presumed primary target, survived with a minor injury. I am no fan of politicians or their institutions, but this isn’t the way to change things for the better. Not even close! If you dislike a politician, vote against him, or better yet, do something productive: Build a life for yourself that doesn’t hinge on politics or depend on government doing things your way. Be...
A clear bag policy is now in effect at the Curry County Events Center. Commissioners on Tuesday approved a recommendation by Events Center General Manager K. C. Messick to implement the policy as a new security measure. "It's previously been handled on an event by event basis. The new policy would be for 'scanned ticket' events," Messick said to commissioners. The new policy generally limits the clear bag size to 12 inches by 12 inches. "There will be some exceptions such as m...
The horrid attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump amidst a rancorous presidential campaign brings to mind the phrase, “let us have peace.” Those are the words chiseled high over Riverside Drive, right above the portico on Grant’s Tomb. It was the slogan used by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, the victorious Union Army commander in the Civil War, in his successful 1868 presidential campaign. Opened in 1897, the granite and marble mausoleum on 122nd St. was once the most visited tourist site in the country, outdr...
Ever on the hunt for adventure - and with blissful ignorance - I signed on to help drive a 26-foot rental truck from Texas to New Jersey this month, a journey of 1,800-plus miles through eight states. Much to my surprise, anyone with a driver's license can waltz into a rental agency and pick up one of these boat-sized vehicles and drive it away with absolutely no instruction whatsoever. Our truck – a gigantic mustard-yellow creation – was theoretically designed for three: the...
Editor's note: This is one in a continuing series of interviews with local officials. KC Messick is the general manager for the Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds. All entries will go through the Curry County 4H Extension Office. Q: What are costs for entry this year? Are there discount nights for rides? A: Gate prices for 4 and...
Anthony Ortega sprinted eastbound on West Kaywood in Portales before turning south on North Avenue B about 3 a.m. Monday, law officers allege. He left behind a black hat and the man he’s accused of killing: Benigno “Ben” Castillo, 51, according to an arrest affidavit filed last week in Roosevelt County Magistrate Court. Emergency responders transported the unresponsive Castillo from his pickup truck to Roosevelt General Hospital. Not long after, Castillo died there from a gunshot wound to an artery in his upper thigh, the c...
