Portales Planning Director Sammy Standefer said Portales set an all-time record in the 2009-2010 fiscal year for new home construction and for additions and alterations to existing homes. • My turn: Motorist ends up on YouTube in roundabout way

I’ve done pretty dumb things behind the wheel of a car in the past. But I have never tried driving through the center of a roundabout, like the guy in this video. A church in Clovis has a camera facing the intersection of Llano Estacado and Norris streets, directly on the roundabout. And personally, I’d like to shake the hand of the person who put it there. September 28, 2006, was a nice, sunny, clear day, and someone was driving at a high rate of speed east on Llano Estacado in a gold car. The driver never hits the bra...

  • Lawyer indicted on trafficking charges

Freedom New Mexico A Roosevelt County grand jury indicted a local lawyer July 16 on felony drug trafficking charges, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Roosevelt County Sheriff. Police said deputies from Roosevelt and Curry counties and Clovis police officers found methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription pills and drug...

  • Horses have their hangups

The owner told Warren that Della had a reputation of being hard to shoe. She was an 18-year-old mare whose foals were sought after for the cutting genes she passed down. He had been offered $50,000 for her but declined. He wanted her shod. Since Warren did the shoeing, he was chosen to confront her. Horses have individual eccentricities. Some are cinchy, some don’t like their ears touched, their bean cleaned, mane combed or feet messed with. Della did not abide any touching of her legs above the hocks. An odd quirk, probably...

  • Police say fewer people riding in truck beds

    Sharna Johnson

Local law enforcement say they see fewer and fewer kids riding in the back of pickup trucks, in part because of seatbelt laws and because of growing awareness of the danger. Wednesday a 14-year-old Texico girl fell to her death from a moving pickup truck when the wind caught a mattress she was holding as her mother drove along State Road 523 just east of Clovis. Casandra Garza was pronounced dead at the scene. Under state law, it is illegal for anyone to ride unrestrained by...

  • New rationer in chief named by Obama

We’re calling him Dr. Ration. Others are calling him the Rationing Czar or the Rationer in Chief. He is Don Berwick, MD, whom President Obama just appointed as the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which runs the huge Medicare and Medicaid government health programs. This was a recess appointment, meaning it bypasses the usual Senate approval process. Dr. Berwick thus avoids hearings in which Republicans would question him closely and a confirmation vote he might not win. The appointment...

  • Salvation not a bureaucracy

    Curtis Shelburne

God’s grace is wonderful. But if we think grace is easy, we need to think some more. One of Jesus’ most famous stories was told in response to a religious lawyer’s question: “Teacher, who is my neighbor?” The question was blatantly self-serving. Luke prefaces the lawyer’s question: “But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked . . .” The greatest temptation we all face is to try to “justify” ourselves rather than accepting by faith the justification that comes only through... Full story

  • Human touch needed even as technology advances

    Judy Brandon

Judy Brandon: Religion Columnist One time on a trip to Houston, our family witnessed an episode that warmed our hearts. Entering through the security gates at the apartment complex next to a golf course, we noticed a young woman running quickly, even frantically through the parking lot. She stopped at a parked car and quickly bent down to the window in the rear. Hurriedly she began making gestures and talking to someone in the car. Then it came to us. Someone, probably a child... Full story

  • a view from under the pew: amos all shook up

    Gary Mitchell

Gary Mitchell: Religion columnist amos the churchmouse: a view from under the pew Editor’s note: Amos is a churchmouse, who types by hopping on the computer keyboard, but he can’t operate the capital shift keys, and he shuns punctuation marks – except hyphens and dashes. amos all shook up boss you may think i look a sight but it was nothing compared to the fright i took my hair may look a bit frizzled but my whole body was grizzled once i emerged from the church s washing machine monster lurking in the dark dank bas...

  • Angels watch over us

Did you know God has angels watching over you? I love to read in Psalm 91:11 that: “He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” (NKJV) I shall never forget an experience even though I was small. During the Depression, a beautiful lady knocked on my Granny’s door and asked to spend the night as she had no place to stay. I was about 4 and was overwhelmed at such a lady. Her clothes and perfume were wonderful. Granny put...

  • Americans embracing entitlement

I travel a lot. I have crossed the USA about 25 times by car and have also done a good deal of driving in Europe — France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and so on. Some time ago I noticed something that one might wish to explore more systematically than just relying on one’s personal observation. This is that in much of Europe the public authorities are who matter most, with the public standing in the back, waiting its turn. Twenty years ago I wrote about this in a column and it all got reconfirmed for me these last c...

  • Clovis offers proposal to Ruidoso racetrack

Clovis has submitted a business proposal to be considered as a possible location should Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino move from Ruidoso. Chase Gentry, executive director of Clovis Industrial Development Corporation, confirmed late Thursday the proposal was submitted in April. Mayor Gayla Brumfield said racetrack officials approached Clovis, along with several other communities in the state, in consideration of relocating its operation. “They contacted us and we did a proposal and I guess we’ll just kind of see what hap... Full story

  • Clipping better left to professionals

One of my daughters has a toy poodle named Rudy (short for Rudoph Valentino Price, since he’s a little lover.) He’s a really fun little guy who is exceptionally smart. The only problem is his curly poodle hair grows really fast. A groomer lady informed me that he should be clipped at least every eight weeks. It got expensive. So I “put the pencil to it” as country folks like to say. I figured out I could buy a set of small, poodle-size clippers for the amount I’d spend on three (maybe four) trips to the groomer. After tha... Full story
