George Speck of Portales writes about why he believes economic growth has been slow: “I have been watching and reading the news and wondering why the Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been so intransigent in their position to not close certain tax breaks given to the very rich. I looked back to the Reagan administration and found three principles adopted by the Republican Party: The trickle-down theory of economics, tax cuts and deregulation. By logic, the trickle-down theory should work but in p...
Freedom New Mexico With so many problems facing our government, it appears that many politicians plan to base campaigns on immigration, just as they have for the past 12 years. That’s unfortunate for those on the border who have been waiting, and hoping, for substantive action on the issue for all that time. As long as candidates see value in playing the immigration card, there’s no reason to expect any changes to the woefully broken system. After all, why would politicians do anything to remove something upon which they wan... Full story
Hotel Clovis has historical value We can all benefit from having such an historical treasure and local landmark as Hotel Clovis. Its value includes its rich history. At the time of its construction in 1931, it was the tallest building between Albuquerque and Dallas. It was also the host in its elegant ballroom to some big names, including Hank Williams. We need to work to restore our hometown gem in hopes of bringing in tourism with other historical sites such as the Harvey House, Lyceum Theatre and the rock and roll museum...

I entered the lockup through the sallyport doors and got a report from the warden of the day. “All present and accounted for, sir,” said my relieved wife, wiping a cold sweat from her brow. We’d been through several weeks of pure hell trying to keep our youngest dog Ranger on the property. It was the first full day without a jailbreak and I was proud of myself. Outwitting a 3-year-old adoption shelter refugee might be small potatoes for Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan but this beast took us to the mat. One day I would come home...

Cathy Keen GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Desperately needed as youth mentors, some men are answering the call despite negative publicity about male transgressions that can keep them at arm's length from children and teenagers, says a University of Florida researcher. Today's high rates of divorce, single parenting and working mothers place a greater premium on men in the community to nurture the next generation, but frequent media accounts about male pedophiles, pornographers and child abusers cast suspicion over...
England has made a choice to remain dependent on other countries to feed them. Recently corporations have proposed to build a modern dairy and sow unit in their countryside. Two activist groups objected saying it would force a significant number of small farmers out of business. The proposal was withdrawn. We in the United States have faced that choice and decided to encourage modern agricultural practices which have resulted in concentration of production and the elimination of most small farmers. Are we wrong or right to...
Blair Anthony Robertson There's nothing to it, really. They get on their specially made bike, with their helmets, sunglasses and matching jerseys, and then they go, riding together mile after mile, the faster and farther the better. Dad, who is 59, pedals smoothly and efficiently while going 20 mph or more. His 30-year-old son sits in front on a custom-made seat, as if on a throne, smiling as the wind washes over his face. When he hears his father grunt and groan going up an especially steep hill, he bursts out laughing. When...
