WASHINGTON, D.C. — Eastern New Mexico was represented at the White House on Friday, with officials from Curry and Roosevelt counties among almost four score attendees from across the state at an afternoon conference in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. County managers, commissioners and a sheriff had a common refrain in sharing their impressions from the visit, namely that the national government contacts developed there would be useful back home. "We appreciate the i...
Dear Alcohol, It's been 19 years (July 23, 1999) since we broke up. I would say our time together had been fun, but it really wasn't. Sure, we may have hit it off at first — you wooing me with the promises of what you could give me. Confidence. Euphoria. Escape. But whatever you had initially provided, you eventually took away — and then some. You also did it all with a few black eyes, broken windows and a burnt laundry hamper in the process. Past photos of our time tog...
Acquired from the last Portales Public Library sale for a quarter, my book-of-the-month summary for July is “1,001 Reasons to Love America” by Hubert Pedroli and Mary Tiegreen (Stewart, Tahori & Chang, 2004, 320 pages). Excerpts: • Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation • The women’s suffrage movement giving women the right to vote • The Statue of Liberty welcoming visitors to America since 1886 • The Federal Hall National Memorial in New York City where freedom of the press wa...
Information on the power of the peanut, transferring an image on to fabric, and creating a photo display frame will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.) Shelly Nutt is with the Texas Peanut Producers Board, and she’s going to talk about the “power of the peanut.” She emphasizes how important it is to pack protein-rich plant-based nutrients into our diets, especially when you’re working out...
If you live on the High Plains and you’re like me, you might be tighter than tree bark. That is a funny saying we have in these parts to refer to someone who is thrifty or a cheapskate. I think my wife really hates this trait in me but what she doesn’t realize is that my cheapskate ways enable her to spend money like it's going out of style. If I weren’t saving it so fast she wouldn’t have any to spend. She really hates it when I get ready to make a large, important purchas...
U.S. automakers breathed a bit easier last week after President Donald Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced an agreement to shelve threatened U.S. tariffs on imported autos and retaliatory European tariffs on U.S. goods while the two sides negotiate lower trade barriers. And if the episode eventually produces a true free-trade agreement between Europe and the United States, it will be a win for businesses, workers and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. But it wouldn’t validate the m...
CLOVIS — This past year at the high school state championship swim meet, the Clovis team set seven school records and posted the girls' best finish in Wildcat history. But Vincent DeMaio, then-head coach and now-director for high-performance swimming, still wanted more. "For us, we've been growing and we're really reaching great heights," de Maio said, "but for me, I knew to go to the next level that we had to bring in a coach that could coach at the next level." DeMaio s...
CLOVIS — More than 20 co-ed volleyball teams competed in Saturday's eighth annual Sand Volleyball Tournament at Hillcrest Park, trying to raise money for a good cause. The tournament is a fundraiser put on by the Clovis Volleyball Booster Club, to help raise money for Clovis' high school volleyball team. "It's $120 a team, and there are 21 teams this year," the event's co-organizer Tisha Brothers said. On average, the fundraiser attracts about 20 teams a year, meaning this y...
It took a little longer than usual to get going. But once the 52nd Annual Border Town Days was under way, people seemed to enjoy the family atmosphere that develops when the communities of Farwell and Texico come together. Rob Pomper, chairman of Border Town Days, said miscommunication with the railroad caused the parade that kicks off the festivities to start about an hour late. "What are you going to do though? It's not like you can beat the train. The train's going to...
In a white cardboard box I keep high atop a bookshelf, there is a post-card sized scrap of an old quilt. It’s made from wool, woven in two patterns. One is a muted plaid, with lines of olive, rust, butternut, green, and black; the other is striped, alternating bands of black and rust with narrow wisps of soft green. The hand stitches are made with thick black thread. There is an accompanying piece of paper. “Christina sheared this wool herself,” it reads, “washed it, dyed it...
I received a crash course in beekeeping last week. Firstly, I had no idea there are hives located at residences right in the heart of the city of Clovis. Little-known fact No. 2 — at least to me — is pollen is collected right off the little legs of bees. And it's edible. Marcus Petroski, a longtime Clovis resident, owns and operates W.W. Honey Co. He and a bunch of other vendors / farmers / families are starting to bring their respective wares to the local farmers market, whi...
