CLOVIS — Andy Correll may be from Knox City, Texas, but he feels quite comfortable in Portales. A former assistant at Portales High, Correll is preparing for his first season as Rams head coach. He was chosen in May to replace Glenn Johnson, who stepped down after seven seasons at the helm. “This is like coming back home,” said Correll, who earned an undergraduate degree in 1996 and a graduate degree in 2003 from Eastern New Mexico University. “I am from Texas, but I lived here for 10 years. This was a pretty good opportu...
The Portales Lady Rams will have to overcome a heavy hit from graduation to top last year. Meantime, the Clovis Lady Wildcats are still striving for the blue trophy. Portales was pushed to five games by Pojoaque last November before nailing down its fourth Class 3A state volleyball title in six years under coach Ruth Chavez. Despite losing four starters from a 22-3 squad, the best record in her tenure, Chavez remains optimistic about this season. “We’re all right,” she said. “Our (junior varsity team) was pretty solid.... As schools in Clovis and New Mexico plow toward serious consequences for failing to meet federal academic standards, at least one appears less and less realistic. The state has neither the resources nor the will to assume management of public schools who repeatedly fail the No Child Left Behind standards for math and reading performance, officials said. Taking over a school is the stiffest of five possible actions. More than half of the 828 public schools in the state missed Adequate Yearly Progress standards for 2005-2006,... Full story

After some initial hesitation about moving to Causey, Maureen Kennedy felt at home in the small town in southeastern Roosevelt County. Now nearing the century mark, the 97-year-old former school teacher has not missed a single Causey/Lingo reunion since the event began in 1989. “I’m just sticking out here like a sore thumb. So many people my age are gone,” said Kennedy as a stream of former students greeted and hugged her Saturday during the Causey/Lingo reunion luncheon at the Campus Union Building at Eastern New Mexic...

During the Dark Ages of my married life, I bought a prehistoric Volkswagen camper and spent the national debt fixing it up. I named it “The Titanic.” It had all the necessary gismos for modern camping — a gas stove, electric ice box, a sink, a bed, a radio, a steering wheel, a motor and four tires. The problem was, they all had to be replaced. It was painted rusty red, so I camouflaged it in case our creditors tried to spot us with a rifle scope. When I towed it home, my wife Marilyn got a familiar glint in her eye. I’d seen... Full story
An artist in stone was J. M. H. Dwight. The stones he carved on were tombstones. There is not a lot of history on Dwight, but we do know that he was born Dec. 24, 1851, probably in Oklahoma, and he died in Clovis Sept. 6, 1929, still practicing his artistic and unique technique of carving stone. “Mr. Dwight homesteaded near House, in 1908, and his daughter, Lona May Dwight, arrived a short time later from Oklahoma,” said Edith McWherter, widow of Glen McWherter of House and J. M. H. Dwight’s granddaughter. In late 1970,...
I recently finished a book by Susan Jeffers called “Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.” I don’t usually read self-help books, but I enjoyed Jeffers’ book, and found her description of “the chatter box” applicable to my life. The chatter box is a person’s negative and habitual voice that will not stop talking. It is the annoying, contrite and counterproductive chatter that finds the negative aspect of situations and people. It is the voice that says, “You cannot do it. You will fail. There is no way it is ever going to happen...
We don’t usually get overtly spiritual in this column; more often than not, the spirituality is covert. Today, however, moves us in a different direction. The spiritual piece is overt, though it is not specific. I want us to think about the common ground that undergirds many faith perspectives. To start with, there might be two basic approaches to the journey of life. One of these is that it is, indeed, a journey, with a spiritual basis underlying it, a spiritual purpose embedded in it, and a guiding power behind it. The o...

Victims of burglaries or violent crimes have long complained that police are never around when you need them, that they seem to be too occupied addressing victimless crimes or that they too often have to play babysitter to unsupervised youth who are creating a nuisance. One case in point in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley is the popular trend among young people to cross into Mexico to have a good time. Lower drinking ages and lax enforcement allows people in their mid- to upper teens to buy alcohol at nightclubs and liquor stores a...
New water rates to inflict financial burden I am writing in response to last Sunday’s guest column by New Mexico American Water Co. Vice President Kathy Wright (“New water rates to provide for long-term”): According to my last water bill, I have one of those households that uses more than 15,000 gallons of water in a month, at least during the summer months. I water my trees, so they can provide shade for my home and lower my electric bill. I water my vegetable garden so it can provide food for my table. I use soaker hoses an... Full story
Mel Gibson drove drunk, got arrested and vilified Jews, thus disgracing himself, and possibly forfeiting millions of dollars in future earnings. Man, was he lucky. By getting behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol level 50 percent higher than the legal limit, he could have killed himself or someone else, as many drunken drivers do. Making amends for being anti-Semitic is hard, but not as hard as apologizing for ending a life. Gibson’s experience is a reminder that drunken driving, like bigotry, is a battle yet to be won.
