  • Patience: Virtue well worth learning

    Freedom Newspapers

Karl Terry: Freedom Newspapers How long does it take to learn a lesson? Sometimes it takes quite a few years. The lesson for me this past week was in patience -- something I’ve handled well at times and not so well at other times. I’ve trained college interns all summer long at the newspaper and this week I started training a new page layout person. The interns have been bright and good to have around and the new layout person is learning fast, but training can use up your patience fast. I went to the funeral of my gra...

  • Positive thinking really takes practice

Anita Doberman: Guest Columist I recently finished a great book by author Susan Jeffers called “Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.” I don’t usually read self-help books, but enjoyed Jeffers’ book, and found her description of “the chatter box” very applicable to my life. The chatter box is a person’s negative and habitual voice that will not stop talking; it is the annoying, contrite, and counterproductive chatter that always finds the negative aspect of situations and people, and says “you cannot do it, you will fail, ther...

One case in point in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley is the popular trend among young people to cross into Mexico to have a good time. Lower drinking ages and lax enforcement allows people in their mid- to upper teens to buy alcohol at nightclubs and l... Full story
