  • Wildcats begin football practice, as Hobbs opener gets closer

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 7, 2018

CLOVIS — Hobbs and the Wildcat balloon tunnel and the trappings of opening night are still two and a half weeks away. Plenty of time for Clovis High's football coaching staff to make the necessary tweaks before that Aug. 24 road opener. Still, Monday's start of practices was exciting in itself. Almost nine months have passed since Clovis' 2017 season wrapped with a state quarterfinal loss at Manzano. The players returning from that 6-6 team and the ones making their debut on t...

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 7, 2018

Portales kicked off its fall practices on Monday morning with its only two-a-day of the season, and after one day, it's safe to say that it's still very much a learning experience for the Rams. "We're learning, so everything is a little bit rusty right now," Rams coach Jaime Ramirez explained. "The players are just trying to learn what we're doing, and all the new players — the fre...

PORTALES — To become a champion, it takes more than just simply winning games. In fact, it even goes beyond practices, as the offseason training is every bit as crucial for any team. On Monday morning, Eastern New Mexico Greyhound football officially kicked off its fall camp, and it went off without a hitch. "The first day of practice went smoother than (anytime) since I've been here," junior running back Paul Terry said. "Guys were flying around, loving to have been on the f...

CLOVIS — The Prince Street overpass is expected to close in about two weeks and will remain closed for about nine months so that workers can make repairs.
