New Mexico men’s basketball coach Ritchie McKay spoke Monday to the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Clovis High School. (Staff photo: Rick White) Ritchie McKay likens many Christians to youngsters during Halloween, a day in which children pull masks over their faces in the hopes of becoming — if only for a night — someone or something they’re not. But he said to be passionate for Jesus Christ means the masks of sin must come off, that Christians need to follow God’s guidance in everything they do. The Universit... Full story
Sexual assaults at U.S. Air Force bases are more widespread than officials first believed, and addressing the problem will require major institutional changes, according to an Air Force report released this week. Air Force teams investigated 85 installations in the United States and overseas and found that many women failed to report rapes because they feared they would be disciplined. The report said “respondents repeatedly described sexual assault as a cultural issue in need of a compelling and sustained message.” The fou... Full story

Leonard Pitts: National Columnist What would it take to get you to stand up for me? Let’s say I’m routinely discriminated against and in some cases outright despised. Let’s say I’m often used as a scapegoat, and there’s an ongoing debate over what rights I do and do not deserve. Under what circumstances would you be willing to break with the pack and speak a word on my behalf? Would it be enough that you simply saw a wrong being done? Or would you need to have some emotional... Full story

PORTALES — It didn’t take long — just two matches — for the first-year Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer program to break into the win column. The Greyhounds scored just 61 seconds into their history on Friday at Texas Wesleyan, but eventually had to settle for a 1-1 tie with the Rams after two overtimes. They left no doubt on Saturday, though, scoring the first three goals in a 3-1 win at Dallas Baptist. “One of the... Full story

He built the first real estate building at Third and Main, made for Clayton Reed and C. V. Steed. One of his grandsons was Carroll Faris, Clovis High School Class of 1950, one of CHS’ great athletes. Carroll, like his grandfather, was an entrepreneur too, f...
Freedom Editorial So we now have another proposal for reforming the sprawling 15-agency “intelligence community” that missed the signs that 9/11 was in the works and didn’t exactly get it right about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It’s a welcome addition to the ongoing debate, but the very extensiveness of the proposal, coming on the heels of a somewhat different proposal from the 9/11 Commission, underlines the importance of taking it slow and trying to get the organization, the policies, authority and the job descrip... The ratings were based on student perform... Full story
