  • Ex-Clovis cop surrenders

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 12, 2024

A former Clovis police officer charged with drug trafficking and as an accessory to residential burglary turned himself in to authorities on Friday. Frank Careri, 34, under criminal investigation since February 2023, was charged July 26. Since he was out of state at the time, prosecutors gave him until Friday to turn himself in. Court records show Careri was booked into the Curry County Detention Center and released on a personal recognizance bond. Careri waived his...

  • Our people: 'You Should Know' host shares her life

Emily Wilbanks, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 10, 2024

Evelyn Ledbetter is a woman of many worlds. She spent her childhood on a farm, received an accounting degree from Eastern New Mexico University, owns a chile farm, is the promotions director of KENW-FM and has a TV talk show. She credits her mother and the advice she left. "I never heard her talk poorly about others. When someone hurt her feelings or wouldn't behave right, she would always just say, 'Well that's on them, I'm accountable to God.' And she would just leave it at...

  • Never had Olympic fever, but I'd check out the break dancing

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Aug 10, 2024

It only happens every four years, but I’ve never caught Olympic fever. Hope that doesn’t put me on a black list for national pride. I’ve always caught the headlines and even enjoyed the telling of a heartstrings, overcoming-the-odds story. But I never have had any event at any Olympics that I didn’t want to miss. I know New Zealander Rex Maddaford, a distance runner at Eastern New Mexico University who competed in Mexico City in 1968. But that’s about as close as I’ve come...

  • Airport power out briefly

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 10, 2024

Power was out late Tuesday night around the Clovis airport following a traffic accident. The sheriff said only one vehicle was involved and no injuries were reported....

The $24.9 million in awards will help offset the cost of new firefighter and EMT salaries for three years, the release states. “Firefighters are on the front lines protecting our communities from potentially devastating blazes everyday,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in the release. “As fires––and especially wildfires...

  • Opinion: Environment Department fighting PFAS

    James Kenney, Guest columnist|Updated Aug 10, 2024

They say fences make good neighbors, but when it comes to a neighbor like the U.S. Air Force, Clovis residents need one hell of a deep fence. I am an outspoken critic of how the Air Force continues to treat the families of Clovis, given not one drop of PFAS-contaminated groundwater that migrated outside of Cannon Air Force Base’s fence line has been cleaned up yet. That’s right – not one drop in the last six years. Since discovering firefighting foams containing PFAS used on Cannon AFB contaminated groundwater some four...

  • Letter to the editor - Aug. 11

    Updated Aug 10, 2024

Ordinance only punishes impoverished “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” — Mahatma Gandhi The city of Clovis has put forth an anti-homeless ordinance that does nothing but punish those impoverished. We cannot ban homelessness to eliminate homelessness. This proposed ordinance (final vote is scheduled Aug. 22) only serves to sweep a widespread issue under the rug, criminalizing those whose only crime is not having a permanent residence. Not only that, where do our city...

  • Opinion: Vance remarks on point, not misogynistic

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 10, 2024

I am what J.D. Vance would have called a single cat lady. Actually, I don’t have, nor do I particularly like, cats. I am more along the lines of a single black Lab lady, or a single bearded dragon lady. But the label still matches my civil status. I have neither spouse nor spawn, which puts me in the demographic targeted by the Republican VP candidate in his critical commentaries on the state of civilization. And guess what? I agree with him. I was not offended when I heard Va...

  • Opinion: Who's driving this boat anyway?

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Aug 10, 2024

Nobody has ever accused me of being some sort of cockeyed optimist. Any rose tint that may have once colored my spectacles has faded due to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. I’m a kind of a hope-for-the-best, plan-for-the-worst kind of guy. On the other hand, every morning when I wake up and pour a cup of coffee in me to get my heart started, I feel blessed. In casting a jaundiced eye over the current world situation, it seems to me that we are neck deep in a p...

  • Opinion: However election ends, you'll be fine

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Aug 10, 2024

No matter which politician attains the office of president after the upcoming election, you’ll probably be fine. I know it’s more popular to say we are all doomed unless a certain politician wins. The truth is, no president has had much effect on my life, regardless of whether I liked or despised him. Or, potentially, her. If they imposed unconstitutional legislation I didn’t like, I probably ignored it or found a workaround. We all commit an average of three felonies per d...

  • Opinion: Police must find balance in how to handle crime

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 10, 2024

If the recent Las Cruces town hall meeting on public safety called by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was intended to demonstrate the public’s concern about crime, it was a huge success. They expected it to draw about 200 people and take two hours to complete. Instead, a crowd of more than 500 packed the Convention Center ballroom for a discussion that lasted long into the night. There were a couple of clear takeaways. The first is a growing belief among residents that Las Cruces is no longer the safe community that it once w...

  • Ask the News - Aug. 11

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 10, 2024

What is going on at the southwest corner of Purdue and Thornton streets in Clovis? It looks like a new structure is going up. Nick Griego & Sons has a building permit to create storefronts at that location, said city officials and Nick Griego Jr. “There was a hamburger joint there when I was young, then an Asian store,” said Griego, vice president of the construction company. Griego said the new construction at Purdue and Thornton will have eight storefronts facing Purdue. “Each one has 800 square feet. Two of them will...

  • Stories about us: Clovis mom got the diagnosis. Then she saved her life.

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 10, 2024

The diagnosis fell on Clovis native Lexi Cross like an anvil out of the sky. "You have Type 2 diabetes," her endocrinologist told her last summer at a doctor's office in Roswell.  First came "shock." Then confronting her own mortality at 40 years old, followed by an alarming thought of not being there for her four kids, particularly her child with epilepsy.  At the time, Cross had said she knew her health habits weren't the greatest.  Exercise was contained to weekend softb...

  • See the edge of the world from Ferris Wheel

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Aug 10, 2024

If you want to fall in love with your community, there may be no finer way to do it than from the top of a Ferris wheel at a county fair, ideally with a cone of cotton candy melting into your hand as you ride. If we’re lucky, we have a number of upcoming opportunities to do just that. Curry County’s annual fair runs from Tuesday through Saturday in Clovis, and folks in Roosevelt County will be following suit from Aug. 20-25 in Portales. I have no insider’s information on wh...

  • Stories about us: Weight loss helps Clovis woman become better mom.

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 10, 2024

It wasn't just that Laura Araiza's lacking health habits left her "feeling tired of feeling tired." Rather, this lethargy festered into her not being the parent she wanted to be for her four kids.  She couldn't play with them. She was "sad all the time." And was prone to snapping.  "They weren't getting a good side of me," said Araiza, a native of Clovis and stay-at-home mom.  It all came to a head on a family vacation last summer. While at a water park in Dallas, Araiz...
